Players continue to grow week in week out as they thrive in the Sports rugby family. It was another full week of action for the mini and junior teams. This week's games were full of action as usual.   

Under Sevens

The Under Sevens travelled to  Tonmawr  for a  round robin with Tonmawr, Porthcawl, Vardre, Skewen & Pontrhydyfen. With a few players away the Sports were delighted to field  a squad to play in all five matches. The squad worked hard to perform very well as a team.  There were tries for Cian Elward, Dion Williams, Isaac Dando, Jesse Jones, & Riley Lewis.  Logan Lewis and  Danny Beale also scored their first tries for the Sports. The squad gave one hundred percent in all the games and managed to win three games and draw two . It was great team effort and very pleasing to see some of the younger players starting to develop.

The man of the match went to Jesse Jones who scored some fantastic tries and played all 5 matches, even though he had been ill.

Under Eights

The Under Eights enjoyed a very busy morning as they played Tondu, Skewen, Britton Ferry and Pyle. The players revelled in the morning sunshine as they tagged like demons. A record breaking 136 tags were ripped from the oppositions’ belts. Plenty of turn over ball was created with the whole team playing their part.  Leo D’Adamo was top try scorer Top Tagger was Rhydian Cronin

The games finished : Bridgend Sports 7 Pyle 9; Bridgend Sports 2 Skewen 5; Bridgend Sports 6 Britton Ferry 5; Bridgend Sports 3– Tondu 7

Under Nines

The Under Nines also travelled west, this time to  Tonna for a round robin with Porthcawl and Bryncoch. First up were Tonna who were at full strength. It was a very even match with Tonna just edging it by a try, winning 20 points to 15. Porthcawl were next, a side who had convincingly beat the Sports earlier in the season. Porthcawl started strong with some powerful runs through the Sports defence to pick up some easy tries. They continued by spreading the ball well to open up gaps in the Sports defence. The Sports persisted and rallied to produce some outstanding offloads in the tackle. Their efforts were rewarded with two tries .Whilst the game was out of the Sports reach the coaches were delighted to see the side improve so much from the last time the teams played  Porthcawl 30 Bridgend Sports 10. In the third game against the physical Bryncoch, the Sports defended superbly and turned over ball. Good team play and great passing was rewarded with a win for the Sports 10 points to 5.

 The team shared Tackler of the Week spoils, whilst Sports  newest recruit Finlay Moore had some fine runs with the ball and supported his teammates in offence and defence to earn him Star Player of the Week. 

Under Tens

The Under Tens enjoyed themselves at the Bridgend Athletic Mini Rugby festival.

Under Elevens

The Under Elevens thoroughly enjoyed a full weekend of rugby. On Friday night they were humbled and privileged to be invited to take  part in the Emyr Owen memorial Game against Kenfig Hill RFC. The Sports fielded a mixed Under Tens and Elevens side.  Both the host team and the Sports scored some fantastic tries and all players tackled their hearts out. The Sports  rucking and counter rucking was excellent but they could not stop Kenfig Hill  from winning the game by six tries to four. On nights such as this rugby was the winner.

On Sunday the Under Elevens also played in a round robin festival at Tondu where they played, Briton Ferry, Porthcawl, Skewen,Tonna,and the host club. The Sports were off to a slow start in the first game as they went down  10 - 5 to Skewen. Dylan Evans scored for the Sports. The team then played Tonna and drew fifteen all with tries from  Joe Wright, Joe Perriman and Gabriel Burroughs. Tondu were next up and in a very physical hard game,  both teams played well with Tondu edging it by the narrowest of margins  5 -0. The Sports then saved the best for their next game  as they defeated Briton Ferry 45-20. The Sports players found some energy to score 9 great team tries with  Maddison Rees, Gabriel Burroughs x2,  Joe Wright x2, Jacob MacLeod x2, Alfie Lewis, and Charlie Paget  all scoring.

Last up was a strong Porthcawl team and in a show of determination the Sports kept going Porthcawl scored 4 tries but the Sports never say die attitude showed as they fought back to score three tries  by Charlie Paget, Joe Major and Dylan Evans. Sadly it was not quite enough as Porthcawl ran  out winners 20-15.

Under Twelves

A strong squad of twenty four players travelled away for a game against Llantwit Fardre. The Sports exceled on the large pitch and the home side had no answer to the Sports attacking and defensive display. The first half started a little cagey with both teams getting to grips with each other. The Sports were winning the breakdown area to secure plenty of ball, but were slightly guilty of not being patient and forcing things with the ball. Defensively the Sports were solid but got sucked in on a couple of occasions. The Sports eventually found their feet to score two first half tries by Sam Gardiner with both converted by Jack Sperduty as they led 0-14 lead at half time.

Seven changes were made at halftime which introduced some freshness with the team and they continued the good work from all the players in the first half as the Sports continued to play some good attacking rugby.

Six more tries were scored in the second half  as the Sports outscored Llantwit Fardre  48 – 0.

Under Thirteens

The Sports Under Thirteens spent an enjoyable afternoon taking part in an invitation festival at Bryncoch RFC. The team played four twenty five minute games against Bonymaen,  Bryncoch, Dunvant and Morriston. They won the first game 17 -7 against Morriston, the second 17 - 5 against Dunvant then having gone down 14 - 0 against a tough Bonymaen side, the players turned around the negative frustration into determination and fought back , narrowly losing 14-12. Then in the last game injuries and tiredness set in as they went down 26-17 to the host side. It is clear the side is continuing to  grow. They scored some great tries and played with outstanding team spirit.  

Under Fifteens

The Under fifteens narrowly lost 14-19 away to Cowbridge. A few decisions didn’t go the Sports way  but the effort was a real positive with some good rucking and tackling.

Tries came from Archie Faulkner-Lerway (converted by Sam Goodwin) and Jack Thomas (converted Owain Peters).

There were a few names in the running for man of the match but Will Price, the captain, claimed it with his strong ball carrying and turnovers.
