It was another frustrating week of disrupted fixtures for Bridgend Sports RFC Mini and Junior teams with the Under Tens, Thirteens and Fifteens losing their scheduled fixtures due to the winter weather. Fortunately, all other pitches survived the weather and fixtures went ahead as planned for the Under Sevens, Eights , Nines, Elevens and Twelves.
Under Sevens
The Under Sevens travelled to Pyle with a depleted squad because of illness and holiday. The depleted squad all gave a hundred percent. The first half was fast paced and very close with both sides scoring impressive tries. In the Second half the Sports produced their best team performance of the season and went on, to win the game with some great turn overs and treis. There were tries for Eli Mccausland, Isaac Dando, Riley Lewis & Isaac Davies.
The man of the match went to Isaac Dando for four fantastic tries and making some crucial turnovers. The whole team really dug in and the coaches were extremely proud of the side’s effort and commitment.
Under Eights
The weather could not stop the Under Eights as they played three periods in an away fixture at Tonna. The squad continues to improve in defence and support every week. It was a game played in great spirit with the Sports outscoring their opponents by seventeen tries to nine.
Under Nines
The Under Nines accompanied the Eights on their trip to Tonna, to play on a very soft pitch not helped by the cold and damp conditions. Thankfully the rain largely held off for the game and the wind was light. Like the Sevens, the Nines were depleted through illness, but all players present, enjoyed plenty of game time.
The Sports displayed some impressive support play and an uncanny ability to find the gaps through Tonna’s defence. Running with ball in hand was a struggle for both teams, but the players adapted well and ensured the supporters got to watch some exciting rugby.
Whilst all Sports players were tired by the final whistle, the tiredness was outweighed by the joy of outscoring their opponents by 40 points to 75. With the Sports managing to win all three periods played. However, great credit is given to Tonna for closing the winning margin by one try for games two and three.
For the Sports, Dan Perriman scored an impressive six tries, whilst Max Hearing and Thomas Roberts got a further three each. Not to be left out Dan Flower also scored two and Sam Heycock crossed the try line for a well-deserved try. With only the Star Player trophy up for grabs and so many players to choose from, it was agreed that Rhiwbyn David & Rafferty Williams should be joint winners for their solid defensive work which turned the possession over a few times.
Under Elevens
The Under Elevens hosted a good Kenfig Hill team who started the stronger of the teams with good hard rucking, The Sports fought hard and kept competing but could not prevent Kenfig Hill from taking a 12-0 lead in the first half. The Sports woke up a little in the second half and dominated the ruck area to play a better brand of rugby to score two tries through Finley Goodwin and Charlie Paget with one conversion. Kenfig Hill hit back with two further tires and conversions to win the game 12-26. Both sides contributed to a very enjoyable game. Sports star player was Gabriel Burroughs.
Under Twelves
The heavy conditions at Newbridge Fields made for a pitch that was heavy underfoot, which conspired to produce a scrappy game. In the spirit of supporting the value of rugby for all; the Sports loaned players to Pencoed to ensure all players had the opportunity of game time and both sides had equal numbers for a full fifteen a side game
The game was a bit stop start but the Sports eventually managed to play some good rugby at times. The Sports forwards carried the ball well in the difficult conditions. Despite this, the home side were disappointed to concede a try at the end of the game, especially when it was scored by one of their own players. The Sports ran out winners 45-5.
