It was a full programme of fixtures for Bridgend Sports RFC last Sunday with all Mini and Junior sides enjoying the opportunity to take to the field. The winter weather seems to disrupt fixtures with monotonous regularity this time of year , it is pleasing to hear that the Wales Rugby Union are moving towards a proposal to  reposition the season for mini rugby sides.  On with the action:

Under Sevens - The Under 7's welcomed Cefn Cribwr for a fantastic morning of open rugby. Bridgend Sports  started slowly which allowed Cefn Cribwr to run in some well worked tries. However, as the game progressed, the Sports played much better as a team and there were some great tries from Cian Elward, Dion Williams, Isaac Davies, Jesse Jones & Riley Lewis.

The result was a fair draw and there was a deserved man of the match for Logan Lewis who made some vital tags, he was also a great team player.

Under Eights - The Under Eights also played Cefn Cribwr in a great friendly game of rugby. A game strong in defence to secure plenty of turnover ball was the motto of the day for the Sports. The game was not only exciting to watch but it showed the Sports players can play as a unit. Which in turn  provided more opportunities to score. It was great team effort from all the young players, particularly in defence. Aled Rees was top try scorer with 5 tries,  Matthew Rees was top taggerwith 12 tags. Sports try Scorers were Aled Rees 5 tries, Rhydian Cronin 1 try. Leo D’Adamo 3 tries. Archie Hall 1 try. Gethin Roberts 1 try. Ollie Balmer 1 try. Under Nines - The Under Nines travelled to Llanharan for a round robin with the hosts and Llantwit Fardre. The Sports amassed a total of no less than 17 tries over three hard fought games and outscored both opponents. The side had great line speed in defence as they pressurised to force knock ons and mis-passes. Offensively there were some fine individual runs and great examples of timed offloads. Marley James made numerous superb direct runs through the middle of the opponent’s defence and was defensively solid to rightly secure him Star Player of the week. Whilst Gethin Jones also beat the defence a few times and put in some try stopping tackles out wide to win Tackler of the Week. 

The game scores were:  Llanharan 10 Bridgend Sports 35; Llantwit Fadre 25 Bridgend Sports 50

The Sports try scorers were Dan Perriman (5),Gethin Jones(4), Marley James (3), Thomas Roberts (3), Dan Flower and Rhiwbyn David.

Under Tens

The Under Tens played against a strong Skewen side. It was the case of a slow start as the Sports struggled to get any continuity at the tackle contest. The support play improved in the second half and the team managed to keep the ball for longer periods which lead to some good tries.

Sports try scorers were Leo Giraud, Osian Stephens (2), Billy Carpenter-Davies, Gethin Evans. The Team Player Award was given to Jayden Walters for his work rate on defence, great support play and offloading. The final score was Bridgend Sports 45 Skewen 25.

Under Elevens - The Under Elevens also  travelled to Skewen. The Sports applied all the pressure in the first 20 minutes to keep  Skewen pegged down in their half for most of the period, apart from a brief period when a few simple ball handling errors and some penalties allowed Skewen to break into the Sports half. A Finley Goodwin try ensured the Sports pressure provided a return and they headed into half time with a narrow 0-5 lead.

A few words of encouragement at half time provided the stimulus for the Sports to up their game in the second half and they started the half with a bang when Joe Major crossed in the corner. The pack containing Finley Goodwin, Chloe Roblin, Dylan Evans, Matthew Oglesbee and Madison Rees took the game by the scruff and controlled the rucks and loose ball. This helped backs  Joe Perriman, Joe Wright and Charlie Paget cross the line. Charlie Paget laced the kick offs in the right spot for the forwards to regain possession which allowed Dylan Evans and Madison Rees to cross the try line 
Player of the week had to be a forward and Dylan Evans received the award beating off some stiff competition.

Under Twelves - The Under Twelves were given a wakeup call on their visit to the sea side, as they lost to an organised Porthcawl side 21 points to 5. There was plenty for the players and coaches to learn from as they look to bounce back ahead of a tough cup semi final next month  

Under Thirteens - The Sports Under Thirteens continue to improve each week, it will be important to sustain the level of improvement as they face some tough fixtures on the lead in to their Ospreys Cup semi-final against Tondu next month.

This week a Croeso Cynnes was extended to Clwb Rygbi Cymru Caerdydd who were hosted by the   Under Thirteens for the first time on Sunday. It was a case of a  little of the unknown and inevitably, both sides were a little cagey at the start, but it wasn’t long before the Sports dictated a pattern that  saw them overpower a skilful Clwb Rygbi side.     

Whilst the Sports dominated the scoreboard , it did not reflect the competitiveness of the game as Clwb Rygbi had some skilful players , particularly in the back line. It was however a combination of strength up front and some skilful play of their own behind that saw the Sports outscore their opponents by nine tries to three to win the game 53-17. Sports try scorers were Ben King (2), Cian John(2), Connor Jones(3), Megan Lewis and  Theo Clarke.  Ian John and Ieuan Pilliner shared the conversions. Apart from the try scorers, there were some stand out performances  for the Sports players which included Jack Morgan, Thomas Coles, Megan Lewis, Callum Lewis,  Mackenzie Dent, Mollie Prance, and Iestyn John.

Under Fifteens -  After a few weeks without playing, the Under Fifteens were keen to get out on the pitch, away at Kenfig Hill. Despite some early handling errors, it was a brilliant team performance against a spirited side. Most encouragingly, the Sports  took their midweek training session onto the pitch; taking contact well and controlling how they went to ground, with better off-loads that bought the time needed for support to arrive. Sports try scorers were  Sam Goodwin (3), Rhys Vaughan, Jack Thomas, Archie Faulkner-Lerway, Joe Ezard and Luke Yates. Conversions from Sam Goodwin (2) and Owain Peters (3). Under Sixteens

With the season reaching the final weeks, the club has taken a bold decision to integrate this year’s Under Sixteens side into the youth squad early to assist with players development. The club plans to play a few Under Seventeens games between now and the end of season to ensure all players enjoy game time.
