Bridgend Sports Minis and Juniors Fixtures Disrupted by the Weather.
The Sports lost out on valuable game time this week as fixtures fell victim to the wet weather. The Under Sevens, Eights, Nines and Thirteens did not get to take the field in their planned away games as the dreaded early morning call came through to advise that pitches were not playable. Autumn had arrived; this was one of the earliest weeks into a season when fixtures had been cancelled. Fortunately, a few games survived as the Under Twelves were at home, the Under Tens and Elevens travelled to Pencoed and finally the Under Fifteens had an important Ospreys Cup fixture away to Mumbles.
Pencoed Under Tens 30 Bridgend Sports Under Tens 20
The Under Tens just lost out on keeping their unbeaten start to the season. They were expecting a tough encounter and that is exactly what they got. Their chances were hindered by the fact that they travelled with a light squad as several players were unavailable.
Sports started well with good handling, tackling and rucking, despite the far from ideal conditions, but they conceded an early try. They responded quickly to level the scores with a try of their own. The lead changed hands a few times with the sides going in to half time all square 15-15. The second half continued in much the same way with both sides playing some great rugby in the conditions and Sports scored a further try to edge into a 20 - 15 lead going into a final quarter. The small squad size told in the final quarter as they ran out of steam conceding 3 late tries.
The Sports try scorers were Leo Giraud (2), Jayden Walters and Liam Sales.
The team player of the day award was given to Jayden Walters who played out of his skin with great support play, rucking and defending. A special mention is given to Tom Curley and Jack Jenkins who both made their club debuts.
Pencoed Under Elevens 20 V Bridgend Sports Under Elevens 20
The Under Elevens played a well drilled Pencoed team and put in a fantastic performance. They matched and to some extent outplayed their opponents, scoring three tries through Madison Rees, Daniel May and Gabrial Burroughs before Pencoed responded with a try. The Sports won the first game 5-15.
The score was reversed in the second game as the Sports opted to experiment as they played players out of position to provide all players with equal game time. Pencoed punished any mistake and ran in three tries before poppet rocket Charlie Paget responded with a try for the Sports. His efforts could not stop the Sports form losing the second game 5 15.
Overall the morning ended with both sides sharing the spoils. All players stuck at it in the difficult conditions.
Bridgend Sports Under Twelves 36 Briton Ferry Under Twelves 7.
In the only home game of the weekend Briton Ferry were the visitors to Newbridge Fields. The Sports had recently played the visitors in a closely fought game. Briton Ferry fancied their chances and the Sports knew that the visitors were going to be physical in the ruck area. The Sports started slowly and did not commit numbers to the breakdown and Ferry frustrated the home team by slowing the ball and being more organised in defence. Once the Sports settled and committed numbers to the ruck they used the possession to send up their ball carriers. Briton ferry were soon struggling. A couple of good ball carries by the Sports sucked in the defence and opened the gap for Jack Sperduty to score the opening try. This seemed to break the visiting team resolve and the Sports dominated possession and territory. Two further tries and two conversions made the score 19-0 at half time. More of the same followed in the second half as the Sports enjoyed both territory and possession to produce three further tries with one try converted to make the final score 36-7.
Mumbles Under Fifteens 21 Bridgend Sports Under Fifteens 29
Pride of place went to the Under Fifteens this week as they travelled away to Mumbles where they secured an important win the Ospreys Cup. Sports welcomed back their Captain, Will Price, and Kady Mader to the line-up. The team responded well to last week’s defeat as they beat Mumbles 29-21
The Sports dominated from start to finish and could have taken greater advantage of the overlaps but tries from Mac Francis (2), Archie Faulkner-Lerway, Rhys Vaughan and Khadier Mader, plus conversions from Owain Peters and Charlie Tomalin-Reeves, sealed a win that was more comfortable than the score suggests. Sam Goodwin made an excellent debut.
