Uplands 12 Sports 36

The way this game started did not look at all good for the Sports. In perfect conditions the home side looked the more impressive by far. The Sports did not help themselves with a series of penalty kicks not finding touch, which allowed the home side to counter attack time and time again. The Sports defence was very good... and it had to be with the pressure they were putting themselves under.

Once more Lloyd Wilson was great over the ball and won penalties for his side. After 30 minutes the Swansea outside half just missed with a penalty kick and the Sports were at last able to get some territorial advantage. When the Swansea forwards were caught off side the Sports center Scott Callicott kicked a fine penalty, and against the run of play the Sports took a 3 point lead. This was not for long as Swansea took advantage of loose ball, and a well placed corner chip by fly half Tom Osborne to winger Greg Handley saw the winger round the defence to score under the posts. Handley added the points and with 5 minutes to half time Swansea took the lead 7-3.

When for the Sports, an injury to fly half Griffiths saw Darren Lewis moved from fullback to the number 10 shirt and Dan Donnelly take the full back spot. With his first touch of the ball Donnelly found the extra space to overlap the home cover defence, squeezing in for a try right in the corner. A fine conversion by Callicott ended the half 7-10 to the Sports.
When the second half got underway Donnelly was again in the action and caused confusion in the Swansea back line, James Donovan was quick to re-cycle the ball and Callicott found space to beat his man and was through to score a fine try that he converted and the Sports now were the ones with both the advantage and attitude to dominate at 7-17.

Lee Roderick up, to this point, had not seen much ball but when he got some room he made a cross-field dash that did not make many yards but completely ‘threw’ the home defence so much that when the ball was re-cycled all it needed was quick hands to Dan Donnelly again in an overlap position and he made it look easy as he took his second try. Once more from the edge of the touchline Callicott converted. The Sports forwards now, looking far fitter than the opposition were taking control. The fresh legs of sub Lewis Obbard and the ever-present ball winner Lloyd Wilson were showing great form along with Greg Thomas and the loose forwards in close passing harmony for Lloyd Wilson to coast over for the bonus point fourth try and Callicott’s kick extended the lead to 7-31. Swansea showed their potential and some resolve as their best player scrum half Gareth Andrew took a deserved opportunist try which was not converted.

The game ended with good Sports three quarter handling and when it looked as if Donnelly would get his third try he off-loaded to Darren Lewis to score under the posts. The conversion was fluffed by Callicott and the easiest kick he’d had all afternoon denied him his 100 percent kicking record for the day.
