Bridgend Sports Mini and Junior Rugby Round Up 05.11.17

It was a trip to the seaside this week for all mini teams with away games against the Seaweeds at Porthcawl. The Under Sevens, Eights, Tens and Elevens all played whilst the Under Nines went without a game as unfortunately, the home team gave early notice that the fixture could not be fulfilled.

The Junior teams were mostly at home against a mix of clubs.  The Under Fifteens travelled to Swansea Valley side Vardre.

All teams held a minute’s silence for former Sports player Alan  Harris who sadly passed away on Thursday after a short period of illness. Our deepest condolences and sympathy are extended to Alan’s family.

In the home games, the morning kicked off with games for the Under Twelves and Fourteens.  The Under Twelves showed they are continuing to learn and grow with a fine 50 points to five victory over Porth Harlequins.

The Fourteens played Llantwit Major, both teams competed strongly at the breakdown. The Sports registered their first score after securing quick ball. They made good use of an overlap for Rhys Vaughan to score in the corner. Sports scored their second try just before half time when Luke Yates burst through a gap in Llantwit’s defence. Owain Peters added the conversion.

In the second half the Sports piled on the pressure with Rhys Vaughan scoring two further tries to complete his hat trick. The final try of the game was an interception by Khadier Mader who scored directly under the posts. Owain Peters converted to complete the scores and secure a  29-0 victory. Rhys Vaughan was player of the week.

The Under Fifteens were at Vardre where they  paid the price for a slow start. They conceded two tries within minutes before they fought back with a try , Vardre restored their lead before the Sports scored again to make the game all square at 19-19 at the end of the first half.  Vardre were out of the blocks early in the second half to restore their lead before the Sports levelled again and set up a nail-biting finale. It was Vardre who claimed the honours with the final try to register a 29-24 victory. Jamie CarrCurtis Lewis and Ethan Powell scored the Sports tries.  Dafydd Williams added two conversions.

The Under sixteens played their second game of the week, having enjoyed an exciting game against Aberavon Green Stars on Wednesday where they pulled off the narrowest of victories with a 31-32 win. Tourists Whitehead were the visitors this week-end. It was another close affair but this time the Under Sixteens fell short, going down by 15 points to 19. Sports try scorers were Deacon Coles (2) and Ethan Bevan.

Down at the seaside, the Under Elevens were on fine form as they played three, twenty-minute periods against Porthcawl.  They did not have it all their own way however. They battled back after the home team raced into a 14-0 lead. with two quick tries that were converted.  The Sports hit back when Ben Evans was set free from the kick off. He set off on a run, evading defenders before he was tackled on the Porthcawl five metre line, good support from Dan Harris enabled him to crash over for the Sports first try of the game. Jack Sperduty converted. Porthcawl hit back with another converted try to take the score to 21 - 7.  It was a hectic first 15 minutes as the Sports struggled to get a grip of the game but they gradually turned the screw for Dan Harris and Ben Evans to score further tries with  Jack Sperduty on fine form with the boot to level the scores at half-time.

In the second period, the Sports forwards started to punch holes in the Porthcawl defence. There were some good strong runs by Gruff Roberts, Deacon Keseru, Dylan Harrison, Lewis and Callum Maul. The continued pressure was rewarded with tries from Joel Bennett and Deacon Kesuru, again converted by Jack Sperduty for the Sports to lead 21-35. With their tails up the away team entered the third period, sustaining the pressure in both defence and attack to score five further tries through Ben Evans  (3) and Dom Hurley (1) and Sam Gardner (1) . Dom Hurley leaped over a ruck to score in the corner for his and Sam Gardner cleverly released the ball when tackled only to then play the ball again by picking the ball back up and dive over the try line. Three of the tries were converted by Eli Davies, Ben Evans and Jack Sperduty. It was an excellent all-round team effort as they had forced their way back into the game against a useful Porthcawl team.

The Under Tens narrowly lost to Porthcawl by one score in a thriller with some glorious tries scored. In the true spirit of junior and mini rugby, the Sports loaned Porthcawl a player. Despite a valiant effort the Sports were pipped 51-46 but rugby was the overall winner.  Gabriel Burroughs was Sports player of the week.

The Under Eights also enjoyed the sea air as all players worked hard in their three periods of rugby. In this game, the Sports raced off in the first period to register six tries against Porthawl’s three. The second was a little closer at two tries to five and only one try separated the two sides in the third as the Sports edged the period five ties to four to make the overall game score Porthawl 8 Bridgend Sports 16.  Sports try scorers were Zack Hughes(1) Ellis Morgan(1) Dan Perriman (4) Rhys Evans (2) Thomas Roberts (3) Rhodri Owen(1) Kayden Jones (2) and Gethin Jones (2).Star player of the week was Thomas Roberts

The Under Sevens narrowly lost out 10 points to 9 to the Seaweeds in another entertaining game that was full of running.  Sports try scorers were Alan Rees with two and side stepping starlet Ollie Balmer with seven. This was supported by some expert tagging from Gethin Roberts, Tyler Pascoe, Matthew Griffiths and Archie Hall. Ollie Balmer was awarded player of the week and Holly Eynon the most improved player.
