Mini and Junior Weekly Round Up 09.09.18

Bridgend Sports Mini and Junior Rugby Round Up.

Bridgend Sports Mini and Junior Rugby season has started with some great performances from all sides. The first week of the season saw the club field sides from under sevens through to under sixteens.  It is great to see so many young players enjoying playing the game in the town.     This week most of the mini teams were away with the Twelves, Thirteens and Fifteens all at home.

The Under Eights were very industrious in their game as they clocked up an impressive 97 tags and 18 tries in a round robin with Valley Ravens and Tondu at Ogmore Vale. The coaches set the key themes of the day which were passing and off loading with teamwork. The side did not disappoint as the side competed well in all games to produce some credible results.

There were some stand out performances from Holly and Aaron Eynon for their evasive play and determination, then Seb Stowe for an improved performance and Oscar Gee for his overall achievements.

The Under Nines faced a tough morning at Bryncethin where they put in a brave performance and great effort as they make the tough transition from tag to contact and tackling. They scored four tries with  Rhys Evans, Rhodri Owen and Dan Perriman all getting on the scoresheet. Other notable performances were put in by tackler of the week Rafferty Williams and star player Thomas Roberts.

The final score was Bryncethin 60 Bridgend Sports 20

The Under Tens

Fresh from last weeks victory over our neighbours, the Under 10’s travelled to Llantwit Fardre  for a great morning of rugby. The hosts were able to field 2 teams so the Sports played both!

Over the 2 games the fourteen player travelling squad played some excellent rugby with good ball handling, committed tackling and great rucking. Their defence was fantastic as they put immense pressure on a good Llantwit Fardre team through some excellent work at the ruck to recycle ball. The Sports emerged on top in the opening game as the registered a 35 - 15 win with tries from Leo Giraud (3), Noah Roberts (2), Lennon Griffiths & Osian Stephens.

They also won the  second game 30 - 5 with tries from Leo Giraud (2), Noah Roberts (2), Gethin Evans and Billy Carpenter-Davies.

The Under Elevens battled out at excellent 35 all draw with Bryncethin. Both teams rucked, tackled and played some fantastic rugby. Try scorers were spread around the team with Dylan Evans, Chloe Roblin, Gabrial Burroughs, Matthew Oglesbee, Joe Perriman and 2 from Charlie Paget.

This week's star player of the week was Finley Goodwin who carried on from last week with awesome jackling and rucking. It was only his second game for the Sports. He has settled in well with the squad.

The Under Twelves also continued their excellent start to the season as they possessed to much power and pace to defeat a spirited Baglan side who never gave up and in the true Sports tradition the Under Twelves retained complete respect for their opponents.

The Under Thirteens followed the lead of the Tens and Twelves as they have also won both their opening fixtures of the season. Last week they defeated Fairwater away winning 31 – 7 and this week they went one better defeating Treharris fifty points to twelve at Newbridge Fields. The Sports scored eight tries : Connor Jones (4) Cian John (2) Iestyn John and Tom Chick with Ieuan Pilliner slotting over five conversions.

The Under Fourteens are rebuilding and missed this week’s games but will continue to run to ensure as many players as possible have access to game time each week.

The Under Fifteens played out a thriller against a quick CRICC side. The Sports had the better of the second half and came close to a well-deserved draw but the game ended 25-32 with tries from Charlie Tomalin Reeves, Rhys Vaughan (3) and Khadier Mader.

The Sports with their philosophy of game time rugby and development for all are keen to recruit across all age groups. Training is every Wednesday from 6 p.m at the Bandstand Field, Newbridge Fields behind the Recreation Centre. The club is entering its eightieth year and with the support of major Sponsors Knights Brown, Jehu and the Stephenson Group, all sides have new kit this season, in the traditional Blue and White of Bridgend. The intent is to continue developing rugby for all. Give it a try.
