It was another packed Sunday morning of action for Bridgend Sports that kicked off with the younger teams.

The Bridgend Sports Red and Blue teams gave their all in difficult conditions. Under Nines

The Under Nines played Bryncethin and both sides played out a 25-25 draw. Bryncethin got straight to work from the whistle scoring a well-deserved try into the corner. The Sports soon got into their rhythm with some good runs into space and off loads in the tackle area. Sports defensive pressure was organised and effective. The hosts conceded a few penalties to allow the Sports the  opportunity to take the ball forward. Play was evenly matched   and the overall result a fair reflection on how well both sides had played.

Sports try scorers this week were Dan Flower, Louis Payne, Max Hearing with two and Rafferty Williams. Tackler of the week spoils went to Dan Perriman, and Louis Payne was deservedly awarded the Star Player of the week.

Under Tens

The Under Tens  played at  Tondu against the hosts and Valley Ravens. The team started  slow but soon found their mojo and pressurized the opposition with good line speed. The support play was much improved, and the side played with more width to put players into space with the pass to score some excellent team tries.

The final scores  were:  Valley Ravens 0 - Sports 7 ( Try scorers Noah Roberts x2, Lennon Griffiths x2, Billy Carpenter-Davies, Osian Stephens and Jayden Walters).

Tondu 3 - Sports 10 ( Try scorers Leo Giraud, Gruff Lewis, Stanley McCallister, Sion Coulthard, Osian Stephens x 2, Gethin Evans, Hari Coulthard, Billy Carpenter-Davies, Reuben Williams).

Tondu 0 - Sports 6 (try scorers Billy Carpenter-Davies x 3, Hari Coulthard, Gruff Lewis, Reuben Williams).

Billy Carpenter-Davies was team player of the week for his support play and offloads.

Under Elevens

The Under Elevens enjoyed their short trip to  Bryncethin, as they produced  one of their best performances. They played at pace with some great passing , rucking and counter rucking to secure  turn over ball. This was supported by some great on field communication. The Sports ensured all players took the field in the second half and all players continued with the positive start to ensure a 10 -35 half time lead was not surrendered. The Sports ran out  winners 20 - 60.

Sports top player was Madison Rees who was pushed close by Chloe Roblin but credit must go to all players for a top team performance.

Under Twelves

The Under Twelves entertained Gilfach Goch and willingly shared players to ensure both teams played with a full team. Every player had plenty of game time the results was a game full of excellent free flowing rugby with the home team dominating proceedings to win 51-0.

Under Thirteens  .

The Under Thirteens took a well-earned break and used the opportunity to reflect on a positive  season to date. With very healthy squad numbers, they began early preparation for the squad’s  ongoing development and enjoyment of the game for next season.  There is a real buzz within the group. All players are keen to keep building for next season; new players are always welcome into the Sports rugby family where development and  enjoyment of the game are the primary focus.

Under Fifteens

Porthcawl were the visitors for a Sports team missing several players through injury and other commitments. A few Sports players played out of position. Despite this the Sports had an excellent first half and really took the game to Porthcawl.

Rhys Vaughan and Mac Francis scored a try each and Owain Peters added a conversion to give the Sports a well-deserved 12-5 lead at half time. Unfortunately, the Sports were unable to react to the greater Porthcawl numbers which allowed the visitors to make a few changes at half time. While there were a few handling errors in the second half, the Sports players left everything out on the pitch and finished the match as they started , losing in the end  12-32.

Man of the Match for his distribution, attitude and grit was Zac Morris but the whole squad should take credit for a solid team effort.

Under Sixteens

Sports 17 Ammanford 22

The Under Sixteens enjoyed a real physical battle, against west Wales’ visitors Ammanford. The team continues to grow and put up a good fight against the visitors, losing by a single try, with the final score 17 – 22.   Congratulations to Geraint David on scoring his first try for the Sports.
