Mini and Junior Round Up 15/10/2017

It was a full fixture list for the Bridgend Sports age group teams this week as the club fielded sides from Under Sevens all the way through to Under Sixteen level on a hectic Sunday morning.  The Junior Teams’ Under Twelves, Thirteens, Fourteens and Fifteens were all at home whilst the Under Sixteens travelled to Porthcawl for an Ospreys cup game against the Seaweeds.

The Under Twelves got the morning off to a positive start with a 15-5 victory against Baglan. The Under Thirteens were at home against Aberavon Green Stars, they gave a great account of themselves with tries from Sam Barraclough and Luke Llewellyn before running out of steam in the second half for the Green Stars to win 10-44. The Under Fourteens played out a 0 – 0 draw in a thrilling encounter with Mountain Ash. The score line did not reflect the excitement the game produced. Two well matched teams played some great attractive rugby but it was the commitment shown in defence by both teams that won the day as neither try line was breeched.

The Under Fifteens continued where they left off last week by defeating Treharris by 49 points to nil this week. They let loose from the opening whistle to run in nine tries and converting two.

The Under sixteens had their focus on an Ospreys Cup fixture against Porthcawl which they knew would be a very tough encounter, beforehand.  In an absorbing, yet thrilling encounter, it was the Sports who came away with the spoils with an awesome seven ties to five 37-34 victory. The side produced some lovely rugby to run out deserved winners.

The Mini Rugby teams also enjoyed their week-end as they all travelled to Kenfig Hill. The enthusiastic Under Sevens started well as Seb Stowe and Ellis Kendall proudly scored their first tries for the club. Wingers Ollie Balmer and Gethin Roberts both put in a dazzling display to score five and four tries respectively, each showing great speed and agility. Matthew Griffiths also scored a great try showing strength and determination Top taggers were Archie Hall, Tyler Pascoe and Ollie Balmer. Leo Dadsmo and Oscar Gee further added to the tag count. Ellis Luke and Mikey Heanue provided some great support work for the team to edge Kenfig Hill 7 – 9 and 3 -4 in both games.

The Under Eights also edged out Kenfig Hill in their game with tries from Dan Perriman (5) Rhys Evans (5) Louis Payne (1) Ben Williams (3) Max Hearing (1) Gethin Jones (1) Sam Heycock (3) and Kayden jones (1).

The Under Nines had a tough encounter against a much bigger Mules side. They showed great character and fighting spirit to comeback when things got tough. They were outscored 8-4 in the first game but won the second game 0-1. The coaches were proud of a huge defensive effort. Tries scored by Leo Giraud (3), Jayden Walters (1) and Gryff Lewis. The team player award went to Jayden Walters for making offloads before and after contact and for his sterling defensive work.

The Under Tens experienced a tough day at the office as they failed to register a score against a tough Mules outfit.  The Mules were comfortable victories but The Sports showed great never say die spirit and will learn a great deal form the fixture.

Finally, the Under Elevens had to dig deep against a very physical Mules team who were also tough in defence. The Sports put in a fantastic effort to come back from Ten points to nil and Twenty Points to Five down, to grind out a Twenty all draw.
