Mini and Junior Weekly Round Up 21.10.18

It was another full programme of action for the Mini and Juniors this week with some tough games thrown into the mix this week. Newbridge Fields was a hub of activity and it was great to see every player who turned up for the Sports get onto the field of play to enjoy game time which is so important for the long-term sustainability of the game.  To quote Alexandre Graham Bell:

“The most successful in the end are those whose success is the result of steady accretion.”

With all age groups in action again this week the club is certainly growing and the club’s values of being inclusive and putting young people at the forefront of everything the club does will continue to serve both the club and the game well. Onto the action

Under Sevens

The Under Sevens travelled to Pencoed to play a round robin with Pencoed & Llanharan. The Sports had a large squad and therefore split into two teams, as did Llanharan. Both Sports sides played 3 games with running rugby the order of the day. There were some close games, but the Sports managed to win all six of their matches. Eli McCauslan made a great try scoring debut. There were also six tries from Cian Elward and five each from Dion Williams and Isaac Davies. Several other players also added to tries to the score sheet. Isaac Dando was deserved man of the match for being a true team player and for his consistent performance.

The team is certainly growing, and everyone involved is enjoying their rugby.

Under Eights

Pencoed also hosted the Sports and Llanharan. The Sports again split their squad and played three games against LLanharan. It was a great morning of rugby with Llanharan winning one game and the Sports two.

Bridgend Sports Blue 11 – Llanharan 10

Bridgend Sports Blue 2 – Llanharan 7

Bridgend Sports Red 5 – Llanharan 4

Sports top try scorer today with a solid all round performance was Leo D’Adamo. He scored four tries and bagged seven tags. Power house Matthew Griffiths was top tagger with thirteen.

The Sports try Scorers were : Leo D’Adamo (4), Ellis Kendall (2), Ollie Balmer (2), Mikey Heanue (2),Gethin Robert (2) Archie Hall (1), Matthew Griffiths (1), Rhydian Cronin (1)  Seb Stowe (1)  Blair (1) Charlie Hearing (1)

Under Nines

The Under Nines followed the two younger teams to Pencoed and found themselves in a round robin. They delivered another proud performance losing out to the hosts overall 45 to 20. However, undeterred the Sports finished the victors over Llanharan at 50 to 25.  In the first game Pencoed made good use of the wide ball catching the Sports out to cross the try line. The Sports put in an improved defensive performance to turn defence into attack with some straight running to then create gaps. This was also added to with some fantastic offloads and quicker ball recovery from the tackle area. Pleasingly every player became involved and contributed to a stellar team performance.

AJ Crawley was tackler of the week, whilst some straight driving runs saw Ellis Morgan secure the star player of the week. Sports try scorers were; Rafferty Williams (2),Max Hearing(2),Dan Perriman(5),Thomas Roberts(2), Louis Payne (1),Kayden Jones(1), Sam Heycock(1).

Under Tens

The Under tens returned to form with a fine performance as they defeated Tondu by fifty points to twenty at the Bandstand

Under Elevens

The Under Elevens did not follow the example of the Under Tens as they went down to a crack Tondu side who dominated the first half as they ran in six tries without response. Tondu were certainly hungry for the win. To their credit the Sports Under Elevens responded in the second half to outscore Tondu by two tries to one but they could not overturn that large first half deficit. Sports try scorers were Finley Goodwin and Chloe Roblin.

Finley Goodwin was also the star player of the week for his outstanding rucking and counter rucking.

Under Twelves

In another tough encounter against a god physical Tondu team the Sports Under Twelves did well to secure a 14-0 win. In a marked contrast to the game of the previous week the Sports failed to dominate the ruck area which then stifled their back play, despite their overall dominance of possession and territory.

In a very tight game which was scoreless at half time, it took an excellent break down the touch line from Ben Evans to break the deadlock. The Sports second try was scored by Toby Atkins which followed some good ball carrying by Gruff supported by the pack. Both tries were converted by Sam Gardner.

Under Thirteens

It was a tough day in the derby against neighbours Bridgend Athletic as the Sports lost their unbeaten record to their neighbours. It was always going to be hard encounter and whilst the Sports enjoyed most of the territory in the opening fifteen minutes they could not make it count. They paid the price as they allowed the Athletic to dominate the ruck area and then create space for Rhys Hockings to run in six tries. The Sports however stuck to their values and made sure every one of their squad of twenty-two had the opportunity to enjoy game time. Conor Jones replied for the Sports early in the second half. Overall the game will be of enormous value as the Sports continue their journey and continue to build a squad that has great spirit, respect for people and a sense of community both on and off the field.

Under Fifteens

Bridgend Sports Under Fifteens came up against Pontrhydyfen and competed well against a very strong and physical side. They went in 5-26 at half time with a single try for Archie Faulkner-Lerway. The second half was much closer with the Sports just about pipping it with a strong defensive performance and two great tries from Mac Francis and a conversion from Charlie Tomalin Reeves. Sports captain Will Price was their man of the match. Final score: 19-36.
