Bridgend Sports Mini and Juniors Weekly Round Up. 22.10.17

Storm Brian had wreaked havoc the day and night before, but the high wind helped save a few fixtures  as it dried out the rugby grounds that had suffered a soaking in the run up to this week’s games.  It did not however prevent the Under Thirteens and Fourteens having their away fixtures cancelled the night before due to the adverse weather.

The Mini section seemed to thrive in the uncertainty as all sides travelled to the Vale - of Glamorgan for games against Cowbridge and Llantwit Major. It was a productive week end as the weather eventually brought some sun to inspire some thrilling rugby from all sides.

The Under Sevens continue to build confidence. They played six periods of rugby against Llantwit Major (3) and then Cowbridge (3).  In the first games, debutants Bailey Williams and Sam B are learning fast with both scoring a try and making some fine tags. Others who showed great support throughout, were Holly and Aaron Eynon and Ellis Luke. Matthew Griffiths was on fire as he bagged eight tags altogether. Tries over the three games were scored by Aled Rees with five, Gethin Roberts with two tries and Seb Stowe with one. The overall scores saw the team win 2 games and lose 1 game. In the other team games, there was some great interplay and passing. Tyler Pascoe tagged like a demon with seven tags altogether. Archie Hall scored five tries, Ollie Balmer two tries, Rhodri Griffith’s two tries and Ellis K one try. Leo Dadsmo was the star tagger this week throughout all three games. Oscar Gee was in great support throughout. It was the same return for his team as they also won 2 games and lost 1.

The Under Eights also show evidence of further improvement as each week passes. Again the two sides for the Sports enjoyed the morning with one team winning all their games and the other worked hard to keep the score tight with a loss and a draw. It was an incredible morning of Rugby with the sports scoring twenty eight tries in total, Llantwit Major thirteen and Cowbridge twelve.

Try scorers for the Sports were Dan Perriman (5) Dan Flower (2) Rhodri Owen (1) Rafferty Williams(1) Max Hearing (1) Sam Heycock(1) Rhys Evans (3) Thomas Roberts (4) Louis Payne(1) Kayden Jones(2) AJ Cawly (1) Gethin Jones (6). Star player of the week was Dan Perriman.

The Under nines also thoroughly enjoyed the visit to the Vale. The Sports played some fine rugby against a very big Cowbridge side. They produced an excellent display of fluent rugby with great offloading in the tackle from all the players, which was backed up by some better defence when needed. They drew their first game 6-6 with tries from Harry Mallinson, Osian Stephens, Gethin Evans, Leo Giraud and Hari Coulthard. They succeeded in going one step further in their second game as they run out with a narrow 6-5 win. The try scorers were, Gethin Evans, Billy Carpenter-Davies, Leo Giraud, Noah Roberts, Izaac Bowness and Jayden Walters. This set them up for their third game against Llantwit Major. The early success was sustained as they ran out victors by two tries to nil. Try scorers were Noah Roberts and Stan McEvoy. Other players who played really well were Tyler Ott, Lucas Hostettler-Davies, Oliver Alexandre, Nathan Fisher, Sion Coulthard, Cai Poucher, Ryleigh, all the players gave it their all. The star player of the day was Stan McEvoy.

Cowbridge defeated the under Tens’ two sides as they won 60 – 40. They played Cowbridge B team first, winning 15-40, the win was attributed to some fantastic offloads, tackling with a better rucking performance. The side then played the Cowbridge A team, who produced a fantastic display of ball handling skills but the Sports never gave in and tried hard to complete in all aspects of the game. Despite a valiant effort, they could not halt a defeat against a superior Cowbridge A team. Chloe Roblin was the Sports player of the week due to her fantastic carrying of the ball and rucking skills.

The Under Elevens impressed with a 0-35 victory over Cowbridge. It was an excellent win which was built on defence. The Sports put Cowbridge under pressure to force mistakes and then great team work saw them run in five unanswered tries. The side’s commitment on the day was summed up when they held up Cowbridge over their own line to secure a scrum. They secured possession at the 5 metre scrum against the head and then run the ball to the other end to score a try in the corner.

The Under Twelves were at home for a game against Fairwater.  This was a very scrappy affair with neither side getting going. Storm Brian during the night had created a bit of an eerie atmosphere at Newbridge Fields and the rugby followed suit. The wind was still a feature and neither side mastered the conditions. The Sports got off to a slow start and allowed Fairwater the first score, with some non-existent tackling but then woke up just before half time to sneak a score when Megan Lewis took the ball on a front line out peal to race into to score from ten metres out Cian John kicked the conversion for the sports to take a narrow 7 – 5 lead at half time. The half time team talk woke up a few and the Sports began to assert themselves. It was ten minutes before they were to extend the lead which came from a scrum on the Fairwater Twenty Two, the backs moved the ball quickly, Callum Lewis timed a pass to give Dylan Morgan a little space, he accelerated away to outpace the remaining defenders to score near the touch line for the Sports to extend their lead to 12 points to 5.  It was a lead that they retained until the final whistle.

The Under Fifteens headed to Gorseinon in the full knowledge they were in for a battle. It was a nail biting, exciting game. The Sports going imto  half time leading 24 - 19.  Throughout the game it was score for score. Gorseinon then edged in front 29 -26 but the Sports kept calm to chip away at their opponents to eventually outscore Gorseinon and come home with a 41-31 win. It is a remarkable story of character as the side have struggled through some tough times to now win three consecutive games.

The Under Sixteens run of form came to a halt in the Ospreys cup at home as they went down to a stronger Bryncethin side 0 – 39.
