BRIDGEND SPORTS MINI AND JUNIOR RUGBY WEEKLY ROUND UP 09.12.18

The atrocious Saturday weather disrupted the games this week, with just two games surviving , the Under Twelves were at home for the first round of the Ospreys Cup against Briton Ferry and the Under Thirteens were away to Treharris.

Bridgend Sports Under Twelves  21 Briton Ferry

It was a tense affair at Newbridge Fields where the Under Twelves outscored Briton Ferry 21-12. In a   hard fought game, the Sports were not at their best as they conceded penalties which could have cost them. Nerves played a part as they dominated possession and territory first half but could not turn this into points.

It took some time before they settled and eventually, they scored three tries to their opponents two to secure their place in the draw for the next round in January. Gruff Roberts scored one try and Rhys Anthony went one better with two. Jack Sperduty converted all three.

The Sports travelled with numbers in their squad to play a fixture against Treharris. They had the scale the heights to reach Treharris Park on top of Treharris Mountain to play. The heavy rainfall could only go one way and that was down which helped ensure the pitch was in reasonable condition.

It was a slow start for the Sports again in an away fixture ,  early morning travel and uncertainty caused by the troublesome weather no doubt played a part. If you put that together with some disruption caused by the opposition only having 12 experienced players , inevitable the end-product was not what the Sports would have wanted. For those first ten minutes,  Treharris raced into a 12 – 0 lead.  The Sports paid the price for being slow to respond in the tackle area and a lack of structure had allowed Treharris some freedom to score two early tries one under the posts, the second out wide.

When the chips are down however, good sides rally and support each other and that’s exactly what the Sports’ players did. They set loose their big guns, battled up front and the backs pressed in defence to overcome the brief period of adversity to dominate the remainder of the half. There was nobody more fired up than Ben King who revelled in the challenge. He was the first to score when the forwards opted to pick and go to get behind the gain line, he was up in support to take the final pass and then power his way over the line. Cian John added the conversion.

With the forwards now dominating the ruck area, Cian John started to receive some quality ball and it wasn’t long before he created space by taking on the opposition, following a further burst from Ben King ,he broke the line then accelerated away to score under the posts. Ieuan Pilliner added the conversion. Centre Callum Lewis who had a fine game , he was heavily involved in defence to halt any Treharris attack and then wrestle the ball,  live wire scrum half Will Ellis was always on hand in the thick of things to set further attacks going.

Callum Lewis scored the final try of the half when he and Cian John worked a move, Callum Lewis then created some space near the touch line to score.  A superb touch line conversion by Ieuan Pilliner ensured the Sports went into half time 12 – 21 in front. The second half was a bit of a dour affair. It was not helped by some niggle from Treharris  which went undetected by the match  official.

Treharris changed tactics and resorted to a kicking game as they attempted to pin the Sports down in their own half. The tactic worked in the first five minutes as they registered a try but once again the Sports showed great character and ground out the game. The Sports showed grit up front and skill behind  , none more so than Megan Lewis, Iestyn John, Efan Dyer  and Molly Prance , the latter putting in an enormous tackle to deny her opponent any prospect of a run in  to the try line from twenty five metres out. The Sports were soon back in their opponents  half and when they were awarded a penalty kick, they opted to kick to touch and secured the line out. Megan Lewis  drove for the line from the line out , Treharris did not have the appetite for the challenge and she crashed over for a well-deserved and popular score. Another touchline conversion sealed the game for the Sports. The game was a good test ahead of their Ospreys cup fixture against Tonna at home next Sunday.
