It was week of fixtures with clubs from across ~South Wales this week for the Sports Mini and Junior Section with sides from Bridgend, Swansea, the Neath Valley, the Llynfi Valley, Llantrisant and Cardiff. It kept the transport planners from each club occupied in the week but it all proved worthwhile as young players took to the rugby field on Sunday morning.    

The Under Sevens, and Nines played Maesteg Quins, the Eights travelled across the Bailey Bridge to play neighbours Bridgend Athletic, the Under Tens hosted Trebanos who were coached by British Lion Robert Jones.  The Elevens travelled to Llantrisant to face the Black Army, the Twelves hosted Rumney, the Thirteens travelled to Kenfig Hill, the Fourteens were away to CRICC Cardiff the Fifteens were away at Fall Bay RFC, Swansea, for a festival and the Sixteens hosted Clwb Rygbi from Cardiff.

Under Sevens

The sevens took part in two very competitive games against the Quins, drawing the first 6 – 6 and shading the second 4 – 2. The Sports try scores were Leo D'adamo, Ollie Balmer (3), Tyler Pascoe, Archie Hall (2) and Aled Rees (3). The defence was also up to the task with players keen to take their opponents tags with Matthew Griffiths, Arche Hall taking five each closely followed by Aled Rees who claimed four and Ellis Luke with three.

Most improved player of the day was Aaron Eynon and Calean Cawley also made an impressive start to the team.   

Under Eights

In their trip across the Bailey Bridge, the Under Eights played three games against Bridgend Athletic. All games were closely contested ending 6-4, 6-4 and 9 -6. It was a great advert for rugby in the town. Harry Trevelyan earned the Sports player of the week.

Under Nines

The Under Nines faced a much bigger Quins side and did not shy away from the challenge as they gave their all in what proved to be a very good game which all players enjoyed. Every player made a valuable contribution.  The Sports tries were scored by Leo Giraud (2), Liam Sales, Isaac Bowness and Gethin Evans and despite a great defensive effort from Sports players Gruff Lewis, Osian Stephens, Jayden Walters, Liam Sales. Cai Poucher and Reuben Williams., the Sports were outscored 25 – 45 by the much bigger Quins side. Reuben Williams was awarded the star plyer of the week award for the Sports.   

Under Tens

The Robert Jones factor clearly had a major impact on the Under Tens game as Trebanos raced into a 31-7 lead by half time. The Sports came to life in the second half as they began to hit the ruck area with more force.   The Sports scored 22 points and contained Trebanos to fourteen points, but it was not enough to overturn the half time deficit as they were outscored 29 - 45 overall.

The player of the week was Charlie Paget who scored some of the tries, offloaded the ball in tackles and tackled well.

Under Elevens

The Black army were no match for the Sports Under Elevens who were on fine form again running in some great tries to defeat Llantrisant 27-71. The Sports try scorers were Dan Harris, Gruff Roberts, Jack Sperduty, Sam Gardner, George Jones, Eli and Ben Evans (4).   Rhys Anthony (4), Jack Sperduty (2) and Eli Evans (2) added the conversions.

Under Twelves

Despite their squad being ravaged by injury and illness the Under Twelves put in another god team performance to defeat a good Rumney side by 25 points to 7.

Under Thirteens

The Thirteens made the short trip to the Mules ground, Kenfig Hill, where they produced some nice running rugby to the delight of the coaches.  It was a bit of a shaky start as Kenfig Hill put in a determined effort.  The Sports recovered from the shaky start to maintain their pre-Christmas momentum, outscoring Kenfig Hill by 46 points to 13.  Sam Barraclough crossed the whitewash 5 times with Luke Llewelyn scoring twice and Danny Wilson scored a good try running from his own half. Sean Petty was on form with the boot to add the conversions.

Under Fifteens

The Fifteens covered some miles to travel to Fall Bay R.F.C. to mix in with the home team to play Gorseinon and Pencoed in a festival.  Pencoed won the first game 0-15 but the combination became stronger against Gorseinon, it was a tough first period, but the combination prevailed to defeat Gorseinon 26 – 14.

Under Sixteens

The Sixteens warmed up nicely for next week’s Ospreys cup encounter against Dunvant, in what was their first fixture of 2018. Blessed with a full squad turnout of 27 players everyone had game time with several players also running out for Clwb Rygbi as the visiting team needed to bolster their numbers. In a great advert for Junior rugby at this age where many sides are struggling, the game was played in a great spirit. The Sports were too strong for Clwb Rygbi as they ran in tries from Ethan Bevan, Ieuan Wallis, Elliot Bebb (his first try for the club), Fin Duffill, Dylan Pritchard, Deacon Coles and Kieran Richards. Ieuan Wallis kicked 3 Conversions.
