Banwen 10 Sports 25

The Sports started well, once again with good running intent and good recycling of the ball from several phases allowing them to move the ball very quickly along the back line for Adam D'Damo to score in the corner, Josh Davies missed the conversion and the visitors took an early 5-0 lead.
The following 25 minutes of the game became something of a stalemate between the two 22 metre lines, the over-enthusiastic Sports were caught offside and Banwen centre Mike Smith converted the penalty from just outside the 22 thus shortening the Sports lead.

The Sports then responded quickly gaining good field advantage and were awarded a penalty in a similar position to the Banwen penalty which Josh Davies converted extending the Sports to a 3-8 lead as the half ended.

The first quarter of the second half again became a bit of a stalemate with both defences doing a fine job and both sides making a few errors, therefore cancelling each other out. Then the Sports seemed to find that extra pace and mental fortitude that enabled them to take control of the game and scored 17 points in short order. The first points came from Josh Davies who kicked a massive penalty from the halfway line. The next score was from a very dominant scrum as the Sports pack pushed Banwen over their line for number 8, Gary Punter to pick up and score a classic back row try, the conversion by Josh Davies taking the score to 3-18. The Sports continued their paced-up attack and forced Banwen deep into their 22 where an error from Banwen's midfield allowed Dan James to rob the ball from the hands of the Banwen centre and sprint in between the posts for a try converted by Josh Davies.

With the score at 3-25 and a bonus point try begging the Sports, the last 10 minutes was manic but a few errors and referee decisions went against the Sports, and it was to the credit of Banwen’s attitude that they finished the game on a high with a try by wing Jordan Griffiths which was converted by scrum half, Mike Smith ending the game at 10-25.

This was a day when the Sports pack were outstanding and dominated the scrums, and special mention must be made to the whole front row of Andrew Shillam, Ryan Wallis and Greg Thomas. It was only fitting that Andrew Shillam and Greg Thomas shared the man of the match.

This win assures the Sports promotion with three games left to play, but they will be looking to top the league as well in the resuming games and that all starts next Saturday with a game at the Bandstand field against Tonmawr. Kick off 2.30pm.
