Sports 2nds 17 Maesteg Celtic 10

This was a game played in very wet conditions on a very heavy muddy pitch.

Celtic took the lead midway through the first half with a long range penalty from their fly half Rhodri Thomas. The Sports then upped their game moving the ball around whenever possible in the difficult conditions. From a ruck on the half way line the Sports took the ball on the short side. With the Celtic defence up quickly fly half Callum Griffiths put a delicate chip kick into space. The long striding winger Dan Donnelly burst passed the visitors defence, gathered the ball on it's first bounce before stepping over the covering defender and galloping to score under the posts. Griffiths added the conversion. In the last move of the first half the visitors gained a lineout close to the Sports line and after good work the large Celtic pack rumbled over the Sports line with ever-green Ian Herbert getting the touch down. The difficult conversion was added by fly half Thomas making it 7pts to 10 to the Sports at half time.

The Sports again upped the tempo at the start of the second half hoping to move Celtic’s heavy pack around. They quickly got a penalty converted by fly half Griffiths levelling the scores at 10pts all. Then came the decisive moment of the game. Sports won a line out and blindside winger Donnelly hit the line at real pace, outside fly half Griffiths, who delayed his pass beautifully putting the winger into a gap. Donnelly strode  through the defence with no defender getting near him and crossed the line to score. Griffiths added the conversion making it 17-10 to the home side

This was a game of contrasting styles with the big heavy Celtic pack happy to drive around the fringes whereas the Sports were happy to move the ball when given an opportunity. The Sport's win was based on a heroic effort from their pack. Special mention should go to Jordan Semple and Lewis Obard who were outstanding throughout, also Dewi Rees who made a huge impact when he came on in the second half
