BRIDGEND SPORTS u10s 10 LLANTWIT MAJOR u10s 2

Bridgend Sports Under Tens were fired up for Sunday’s round robin fixtures against Llantwit Fardre and Llantwit Major.

With one game in the last four weeks, the players and coaches were determined that the weather was not going to frustrate their efforts for a further week. The omens looked good as the sun made a brief appearance and the Blue and Whites won the toss to start the first game against the fancied Llantwit Fardre side, but it was the Fardre that scored first as the Sports were forced into touch from an early run. Fardre re-started play quickly to put their players in space, where the lively Steffan Emmanuel sprinted down the touch line from half way to score. The Sports did not let the score dampen their enthusiasm.

They soon put together some delightful phases of play, with good rucking c ombined with some deft offloading and handling skills that soon paid dividends. Joel Rogers split the defence with a skilful run into space to score the try that brought the scores level. It was then a case of a focused defensive effort that denied Llantwit Fardre possession with Iestyn John, Joel Rogers and Hari Williams prominent in the tackle area. Hari Williams was rewarded for his efforts as he supported play, waited for a pass and then spotted a gap in defence to score from six metres out. Cian John secured a three tries to one lead going into half time for Bridgend Sports when he simply left the away team dead in their tracks following a typical jinking run to the line from fifteen metres out. With Llantwit Fardre starting the game in the second half, the Sports needed to ensure their defensive effort reached the high standard of their attacking prowess in the first half. They did not disappoint with some solid tackling and effort from Callum Lewis, Cian John, Joel Rogers and Hari Williams. They soon robbed their opponents of possession to set Cian John free again, as he raced in for his second try. Llantwit Fardre raised their game in response and showed their quality to level the second half score when they worked the ball wide for Lewis Harris to sprint down the wing to score the final try of the game to take the score to 4 – 2 in Bridgend Sports favour.

Llantwit Major faced the Blue and Whites next; the red and blacks could not darken the home team’s spirit and ambition to play open, attractive running rugby. The rugby they produced brought a smile to supporters. It clearly showed the young players are beginning to adapt to the challenge of physical contact game at the ruck and tackle area. The home team scored two tries, one from Joel Rogers and the other from Callum Lewis before Llantwit Major registered their first try.

The Sports confidence was growing and it was not long before the two try lead was restored when Mackenzie Dent made a run. He was tackled, Hari Williams cleaned out at the ruck, for Mason Balmer, Dewi Worralll and Tom Chick to combine and take play deep into the Llantwit Major half, before passing to Ieuan Pilliner who received the ball ten metres out, he changed the angle of attack and span out of a tackle to score. Joel Rogers was next to score , Dylan Morgan gathered a loose Llantwit Major kick, made a break to set up a ruck Joe Rogers received the ball from the ruck, with plenty to do, he used his pace and eye for the gap to cut through the defence to score his hat-trick of tries for the morning . Cian John was not to be outdone and he claimed his third when he received the ball on the half way line, he set off on a run full of pace before throwing the opposition with a couple of side steps to score. It was another John, this time Iestyn John, who scored next, following good support and handling skills displayed by Hari Williams, Mason Balmer, Cian John and Dewi Worrall, Hari Williams popped up again to change the angle before the ball was passed onto Iestyn John to score. Llantwit Major, to their great credit, halted the Sports momentum by scoring next, but it was Joel Rogers wo had the last say of the half as he claimed his fourth try to close the half with Bridgend Sports leading 7 -2.

With a healthy lead the Sports entered the final period with the same level of determination that they started the day with. Llantwit Major attacked from the start but the Sports snuffed out each attack through solid tackling and counter rucking. From one ruck, the ball was worked to Bailey Llewellyn Hopkins who showed good skill when he took the ball into a ruck and placed it well for fellow players to gather and move it quickly to Joel Rogers who sprinted in to score. Hari Williams claimed his second try before the final score of the day saw Ben King take the ball five metres from his own line and run the length of the field, breaking several tackles to secure the overall ten points to two win for the Sports.
