Teamwork and Creativity Masters the Challenge

Bridgend Sports Under Twelves V Nantyffyllon Under Twelves

It was a visit to the Llynfi Valley for Bridgend Sports Under Twelves this week. The side were seeking to build on their positive development and to continue the momentum achieved over the previous seven weeks. The youngsters knew this would be a tougher task than previous weeks, especially as five forward players were missing for the game. Nevertheless, it is very evident the Sports continue to build a resilient squad that has a great team spirit and is growing in confidence as the weeks progress. Special mention is made of backs Abie Davies Jones, Callum Lewis and Jodie Keene who all stepped up to play in the forwards.

In miserable, damp, muddy conditions, with opponents who liked to keep the game tight it was going to be tough. Nantyffyllon also had an outside in half in Jason Quigley, who was able to master play behind the scrum. The Sports had to work very hard to contain their opponents and then show some creativity to score the tries that bring success.

The Sports creativity was on display early in the game. Nanty kicked off and soon faced an early counter attack. The Sports ran the ball back to take play deep into the Nanty half, a spilled pass foiling the attack on this occasion. From the scrum the Sports defenders were up quick to force an error from the home team. Another scrum saw the Sports attacking down the blind side, wing Tom Chick made good ground and a score looked certain but a knock on at the ruck conceded possession. The clearance kick from the home side was picked up by Joel Rogers who made a break then timed a pass to Cian John, he passed to full back Callum Jones who made a good ground. The pressure was sustained as the Sports drove on at two successive rucks. It was from the second ruck that Mackenzie Dent used his pace and strength to break the defensive line to score the first try.   Nantyffyllon equalised before the end of the half to set the game up for a thrilling second half.

Both sides were keen to get the second half off to a flying start as they competed and tackled everything that moved. With the drizzle falling Nanty used the boot to stem the Sports attacks. The tactic eventually took play up to the Sports goal line, but a solid defence and the boot of Callum Jones ensured that the attack came to nothing.  In a great show of character and teamwork the Sports Under Twelves tackled everything in sight. Abi Davies Jones, Callum Lewis, Iestyn John, Harri Williams and Dylan Parry were to the fore, but it was an all-round team effort.

Patience proved to be the order of the day this week for the Sports. A few minutes from the end, from a scrum in their own half, they opted to run with Cian John showing he was not going to be outdone by his opposite number. He made a great outside break and then threw an absolute perfect long pass to put wing Tom Chick away, he then raced down the touch line outpacing his opponents and the covering defence to score under the posts from sixty metres out.  It was a moment of magic from the outside half and the wing. It was an outstanding score that was a fitting match winner.

Success sometimes must be ground out and earned through a great team effort. The Sports Under Twelves had shown remarkable character to secure a hard-earned victory in difficult conditions.
