BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER TENS SECURE A TROPHY TO CLOSE A SUCCESSFUL SEASON

A successful season for Bridgend Sports Under Tens, drew to a fitting close on Sunday when the young Sports side playedtheir final game at the Pencoed Junior Tournament and lifted the Shield whilst RTB Ebbw Vale lifted the cup.  The eight teamswho took part, included: Llantwit Fardre, London Scottish, Nantyffyllon. Penallta, Risca, RTB Ebbw Vale and the host club Pencoed.

The teams were split up into two groups with the top two teams for each group progressing to a cup competition and the remainder progressing to the plate completion. Bridgend Sports found themselves facing Nantyffyllon in the first game, a tough ask and they needed to be on top of their game to compete. The Sports succumbed to their usual slow start and paid the price with dropped passes giving Nanty possession at key times.  Nanty raced into a 2 -0 lead before the Sports hit back with a try from Dylan Morgan. They then began to press Nanty but spilled passes turned over try scoring opportunities on several occasions, only for Nantyffyllon to capitalise on each occasion with runs to the opposite end of the field to score two further tries.

The sports were getting a little warmer in their second game against Llantwit Fardre. Both teams fought the game out and it was clear to all watching, that it would take one side or the other to secure a breakaway to unlock the score board. That honour fell to Llantwit Fardre in the last move of the game as they ran out from deep, found space down the touch line to edge the game by one try to nil.

With pride at stake, it was no surprise that the Sports stirred themselves for the final game of the pool, as they faced Penallta. The Blue and Whites entered the field in a more positive and determined frame of mind and at last, where crucial passes were dropped in their previous two games, they began to stick and the tires followed with three from Joel Rogers and one from Callum Lewis with Penallta claiming a try.

The Sports entered the plate semi-final, where they defeated London Scottish by six tries to one with tries from Cian John (2) , Joel Rogers (2), Tom Chick and Morgan Edwards.  With Penallta defeating the host club Pencoed in the other semi-final, the Sports faced a rematch with a much more lively Penallta team.  Having paid the price for a slow start in their earlier games , the Sports made no mistake in the final. Penallta started with possession but soon lost it, as the Sports marauders closed space down quickly forcing turnovers. The Sports scored five unanswered tries through Joel Rogers, Tom Chick, Mackenzie dent, Callum Lewis and a deserved last try for Harri Williams. It was appropriate that five different players scored the tries in the final game as it aptly illustrate the power of teamwork . Penallta claimed a late consolation try with the last move of the game but it was Bridgend Sports who celebrated with a trophy in their final game of the season.

The young players have all made great strides forward and have developed new individual and team skills. Above all, the players enjoy playing the game of rugby in an environment where the philosophy is guided by key objectives that are based on inclusion, respect and encouragement for young people to play and remain in the game. All coaches, players and their families should be extremely proud of their efforts throughout the season.

A great deal of thanks must go to coaches, Justin Davies, Craig Balmer and Matt Preddy who have given many hours of their time to ensure all children are given an opportunity to develop and partake in the game.
