Under Twelves Enjoy a First Visit to Treharris

Bridgend Sports Under Twelves paid a visit to Treharris for their first game of the new season.  Treharris are a new side on the fixture list this year and the club proved to be excellent hosts who had a positive approach to encouraging young players from both sides, as they grappled with a host of new laws in their next step of graduating to a full 15 a side game.

It may have been a fresh and positive early start to the new season for all, with the only weather conditions conspiring to providing a slight negative, as heavy rain fell throughout most of the game. The rain played a part in stifling running rugby as a few passes went to ground in the slippery conditions.

The home side kicked off, the Sports received the ball and declared their attacking intent early on, as the ball was passed in field to Mackenzie Dent. He charged straight back into the opponent’s half. Some good early ruck play from the Sports served up good possession for the backs to have a couple of early runs. The greasy conditions resulted in a couple of knock-ons to keep play confined within the Treharris 22 metre to 10 metre area of the field. Treharris attacked from deep from a scrum but made little ground as good up first defence from the Sports forced a knock on.

From the scrum, the Sports moved the ball across the pitch one way then the other with Callum Lewis, Tom Chick and Iestyn John combining well before Efan Dyer took a direct route through the home defence only for the attack to fail five metres short of the line. The Sports were awarded a penalty and moved it to Iestyn John on the blind side, he made good ground before being forced to touch.

Treharris attempted to  run with the ball from the lineout, only to lose possession on the ten-metre line.  Cian John saw space and combined with supporting players again and the ball was moved wide to Joel Rogers who made good ground. The forwards continued the attack to secure a scrum. From the scrum, outside half Cian John saw an opportunity to beat the home defence and fend off the last defender to break the first half deadlock. Treharris attacked in the closing stages of the half but they could not break down the Sports defence, with Harri Williams, Callum Lewis, Mackenzie Dent, Megan Lewis and Tom Chick all prominent.

Leading 0 – 5, Bridgend Sports confidence grew and ten minutes into the second half they put some good phases of play together as the team showed hunger for the ball and a determination to run and retain possession.  Megan Lewis, Mackenzie Dent made good ground in one attack before passing to Dylan Morgan who switched play then he passed along the back line, only for the final pass to go to ground, a couple of metres short of the line.

Treharris opted to kick to relieve the pressure, Joel Rogers fielded the kick on the half way line, set off on a run before passing to his fellow winger Tom chick who used his pace to beat the covering home side defence, to extend the Sports lead to 0 -10.

Five minutes later, Joel Rogers was rewarded as some good forward play took the Sports into the home team half, some nice handling saw the winger put into space and he used it well to race in and score under the posts. Cian John added the conversion.

Treharris had the last say with a try right of the end of the game, their scrum half attacked down the blind side and raced in to score and make the final score 5 -17.  Both teams played the game in great spirit. Sports Abi Davies Jones enjoyed a fine debut at scrum half.

New players are always welcome at the Sports, training is at the Bandstand Field every Wednesday between 6:45 pm and 8:00 p.m.
