Sports Under Twelves Light Up Mothering Sunday

An early kick off on Mothering Sunday provided a little serenity after the taming of Beast from the East, the previous week.  The weather has certainly disrupted the fixture list throughout the first months of 2018. An opportunity for a fixture was therefore welcomed and the young players put on a treat with some great rugby for all the dedicated mothers who turn up each week.

Both sides wanted to play an attractive brand of rugby which was evident throughout the fifty -minute game. It was clear that they were also motivated by the challenge of playing a local rival.  The home side gained the upper hand, early on, due to their success in the tackle area where jackal Harri Williams was quick to pounce and rob the opposition of ball.  When the openside wins the ball, a sharp pair of half backs is always useful and the Sports duo of Will Ellis and Cian John didn’t disappoint as they used the quick ruck ball to good effect, opting to vary their attack with forwards Chleo Gant, Mason Balmer, Megan Lewis and Theo Clarke on hand to break the gain line and then from the ruck, the ball was moved wide. The Tondu defence was resolute and forced some early errors to mount attacks from set pieces.

They could not however counter the Sports superiority on the ground. A fine steal by Iestyn John retrieved possession for Cian John to counter attack. Some delightful interplay with Dylan Morgan saw play taken up from the halfway line, Cian John then used his pace to glide through the cover defence to put the Sports 5-0 up.

The home team were now brimming with confidence and were soon back camping on the Tondu line.  Theo Clarke, Tyler Burton and Chloe Gant tried some shortrange pick and go attacks to force a scrum five. From the scrum, the ball was moved through centres Thomas Coles and Dylan Morgan, Harri Williams was on hand as play broke down, he off loaded to Chloe Gant to force her way over to score a second try, right on half time, for the Sports to lead 10-0.

Early in the second half Tondu fought back with several attacks from their own half but Sports wing Iestyn John was frequently on hand to call a halt to any threat out wide. He was also quick on his feet to then secure possession for his side to attack across field, his fellow wing Callum Jones then cut back inside before being hauled down just outside the Tondu 22. The Sports were quick in support to win the ruck and scrum half Will Ellis saw an opportunity to snipe and beat the covering attack to score an excellent try to extend the lead to 15-0.

Tondu kicked off and secured a scrum but lost possession again at the ruck. The Sports then looked to have broken down field with good runs from Dylan Parry and Mason Blamer through the middle of the field.  Tondu however began to master the rip in the tackle to secure possession to counter attack.  This eventually led to a Tondu penalty which they opted to kick to the corner. From the lineout they found a way to put Nathan Lewis in space out wide and the winger made no mistake to score. Lewis Chalmers added the conversion.

The Sports knew they had to respond and they did not fail as the combination of Harri Williams, Theo Clarke and Chloe Gant kept breaking the line, Dylan Morgan and Callum Jones continued to combine well.  Chloe Gant added a second score from an attack, again quick ruck ball saw her in space fifteen metres out. She saw the line and put in a determined run to score near the posts. Callum Jones kicked the conversion to round off an excellent game of rugby with Bridgend Sports winning 22 points to 7.
