Under Twelves Beat the Chill

Bridgend Sports Under 12s V Pencoed Under12s

It was a game that turned out be a scrappy affair but one that went down to the wire with a conversion proving the difference between the two sides, deep into the second half. Unfortunately, the structure of the game was disrupted as Pencoed declined the offer to share players as they opted to play with fourteen, which became thirteen players a short way into the first half.  The confusion, combined with a bitter easterly chill served to disrupt the flow of the game.

The disruption and lack of forwards on the pitch also robbed the players of any opportunity to develop a pattern to the game. In fairness both sides tried to move and run with the ball, but the cold conditions conspired against the intent and ambition.

Consequently, Pencoed resorted to testing the Sports with long range kicks, only for Sports fullback Callum Jones to field and counter attack with pace and guile. It was one such counter attack that eventually produced the opening score of the game. A counter attack from the full back took the Sports into the Pencoed Twenty Two , quick ruck ball gave the backs time to run, Callum Lewis threw a great pass to take out the opposition centres , wing Tom Chick looked to have made it to the line only to be held up. Another quick ruck saw Outside half Cian John gather the loose ball then intelligently kick ahead and win the race for the touchdown for the home side to lead 5 – 0. That looked like being the half time score, until Pencoed hit back with a try. The score came from yet another kick ahead, the Sports fielded it well but were caught in possession then lost the ruck. This time Pencoed attacked from close range and scored the try to level the game at 5 -5.

Early in the second half, another Callum Jones break took play up into the Pencoed half.  From the ruck, forward Megan Lewis made a determined burst up to the Twenty-Two only to see the ball eventually go to ground to relieve the pressure on the away team. The Sports tried hard to run but just couldn’t make their pressure count. Both Tom Coles and Mackenzie Dent worked hard to try and break through as did Will Ellis and Dylan Morgan in defence whenever Pencoed tried to move the ball.

The Sports almost paid dearly for not making pressure count as Pencoed worked their way up field deep into the Sports Twenty-Two then found players in space to run in the try to take the lead 10 -5. The score stunned the Sports into action and it proved to be the catalyst for them to produce their best rugby of the game, at last the passes began to stick. They mounted an attack down the narrow side with Hari Williams, Cian John and Tom Chick combining, the ball was then worked back across field, centre Iestyn John stepped his opposite number, saw the line and defied the odds, against his size, to power over and ground the ball for the try in the final minute. The conversion was likely to determine the outcome of the game and this was slotted over by Ieuan Pilliner.

The Sports faced one more kick off and with their tails up attacked again down the right had touch line, with seconds remaining wing Tom chick sensibly took the ball out of play to secure the home side win.

Once again, the Sports ensured all nineteen match day squad members took to the field as they regularly changed players throughout the game.  The Sports are determined to ensure all players are given the opportunity to develop in a great squad environment.  New players are always welcome to join at any time.  Please contact us via the club we b page http://bridgendsportsclub.rfc.wales  or via our Twitter account @SportsMiniRugby for further information.
