Under Twelves Support the Spirit of Rugby

The Sports were privileged to host Porth Harlequins, a club with a great attitude and ethos of encouraging young players into the game. The Sports players showed a sense of maturity as they were prepared to make up the opposition numbers. Their services were not required however, as the Quins were able to field a full side just ahead of kick off.

The Quins kicked off and were up quick to stifle any idea the Sports had of a quick attack. For the first few minutes possession alternated between both sides as the early morning rain supplied the greasy conditions. Five minutes into the half, the Sports began to dominate possession. They put some phases together and moved the ball through the hands. Callum Jones moved into the line from full back to throw the Quins defence with a couple of steps. He used his pace to run through the middle of the field to score a try from just inside the Quins half. Cian John added the conversion. A second try came quickly, Harri Williams fielded the kick off set off on a wide run, he was tackled, from the ruck Megan Lewis set off on a run; like a good flanker should Harri Williams was back on his feet to receive a lovely inside pass to race in for the second try. Cian John added the conversion.

The Quins showed they were determined to make a game of it as they hit back almost immediately from the kick off. They were awarded a penalty at the first ruck. They opted to move it quickly out wide, the wing found himself in open space to sprint down the touch line to score.  Harri Williams added a third try for the home team when scrum half Iestyn John set off on a sniping run, he was held up just short of the line, but Williams was on hand to snaffle up the ball and ground it to extend the lead. Cian John converted again. Cian John scored the fourth try following good work to cross the gain line from Callum Lewis and Thomas Coles. Mason Balmer provided the link to pass onto Cian John who made the break to score. He converted his own try this time. Dylan Morgan scored the final try to round off a good first half for the Sports as they lead 33 points to 5 at half time.

Heavy showers arrived to temper the ambitions to play a more expansive game, but both sides deserved great credit for their commitment to develop players. This was epitomised by the next score when Tyler Willicombe Burton crashed over for the Sports. He is a player who turns up week in week out to every training session and plays in any position he is selected. He certainly deserved the reward of the try.  Joel Rogers was next to score, he came into the line from full back to cut his way through the defence and battle his way to the line.  The final try was down to the sheer pace of Thomas Chick. The ball was moved out to his wing, he was in space, he stepped on the gas to race in for a try from within his own half. Cian John added the conversion for the final score of the game.  Next week the Sports host New Tredegar on the Bandstand field.  There are a couple of spaces available within this growing squad, new players are always welcome, training is every Wednesday.
