Sports 2nd XV 53 Cefn Cribbwr 19

Brynteg School was the venue as the Sports 2nd XV welcomed Cefn Cribbwr for the league encounter. The 2nds were without a win this season and so were looking to get their campaign back on track.

The start couldn't have been any better. From the kick off, flanker Brennig Emmanuel took the high ball and went charging through the midfield defence. 20 metres out from the try line Emmanuel managed to offload the ball to fellow flanker and Sports Youth product Oliver Rathkey who scored on his senior debut with barely 2 mins on the clock. Keith David converting with ease.

Minutes later it was Centre David who crossed himself after some neat passing along the back line saw him dart in out wide. This time the conversion was wayward.

After a period of pressure from the visitors who were camped in the Sports 22, wing Chris Wintle took a great high ball catch and called the mark. Some quick thinking and a quick tap saw the Sports turn the Cefn defence into knots and allowed centre David to score his second try in 10 minutes. He duly obliged with the conversion in front of the sticks.

With confidence now at a high, the Sports looked to run the ball back at every opportunity, with captain Lloyd Roderick constantly breaking the gain line. When the ball got to wing Jack Evans, he was able to show great strength to squeeze out of the attempted tackle and outsprint the weak defence. Another conversion for David. Try number 5 followed shortly when a somewhat 'improvised' pass from scrum half Titch Davies somehow found its way to the supporting Outside Half Dan Knill who slid over in the corner. The scoring wasn't quite finished for the half, but this time it was the visitors who took advantage at a 5m scrum to crash over and record their first points of the match.

2nd half started off just as frantic as the first, when skipper Roderick again crashed through the midfield and had a dart down the touchline. He was just held up short of the line but superbly managed to pop the ball up for the supporting Pete Roberts to dab down with ease.

It was then the turn of Cefn to play some rugby and the when the ball was spread wide, it enabled some space for their winger to fly in unopposed for a converted try. The visitors started to get into the game more and a rather sloppy misplaced final pass from the Sports threequarter allowed Cefn's replacement wing to pick the ball up in his own half and run 60m to score under the posts. The conversion made the score 36-19.

A second and well deserved try for Rathkey as he danced his way through the opposing backline.

The final 10 minutes of the match saw the Sports regain dominance and with the backline enjoying throwing the ball around, Keith David notched up his hattrick after some determined sniping down the left wing.

But this wasn't to be the only hattrick of the day, as Rathkey found himself on the end of a great counterattack from within their own 22. Lock Dewi Rees galloped almost 60m before offloading to wing Evans who then put the Youngster in for his trio on debut. Conversion was made by Jack Laesser. Final score Sports 53 Cefn Cribbwr 19.

No 8 Alun Evans and hooker Keiron Quirke both had huge games in defence and attack and prop Evan Stanton seemed to turn back the clock to his days as a centre with some eye catching breaks.

With enforced passive scrums, the game allowed for a lot of attacking offence and with centres Roderick and David together with fullback Dan Donnelly running riot behind, marshalled well by halfbacks Davies & Knill - the mobile Sports pack were able to offer a lot in support play too. Big thankyou to Lewis Powell, Pete Roberts and Geraint Lewis who all had to play out of position to ensure the game went ahead.

This was a massive confidence boost for the squad who will know look to carry through this momentum into next weeks’ game.
