Sports 57 Neath Athletic 3

The Sports returned to winning ways on Saturday with an emphatic win over Neath with some fine rugby played by both sides. The Sports were lucky to score from a Scott Callicot Gary Owen followed up by Cory Thomas and centre Ken Morris allowing Morris to score in the corner for an unconverted try. The ref missing an obvious knock-on! The Sports then showed some deft handling, starting with skipper Greg Thomas and slipping neatly through the hands of Matthew Donnelly, Scott Callicot, and Nathan Collins before Ken Morris grabbed his second try with a chip through the decence after a classic dummy. He followed his own kick to score in the same spot as his first try which again went un-rewarded, but the Sports had a 10-0 lead in as many minutes.

The Sports then were forced to defend their line for the next 10 minutes before conceding a penalty that the visitor’s fly half easily converted. The handling of the Sports again showed up well when Josh Collins, Ryan Wallis and full back Callum Griffiths all helped in widening the ball to left winger Rob Spears who outstripped the decence to score in the corner for his first Sports try, extending their lead to 15-3.  When Josh Collings was in support of Callicot and Spears, he took a neat inside pass from the latter to run in under the posts for the bonus point try that Darren Lewis converted. The final play of the half saw a splendid Sports drive from a tricky situation. A long clearance kick to touch from Neath was quickly taken by Griffiths to Morris who lost his footing and was swamped by the Neath threes but flipped a quick pass to winger Spears who made good ground before passing to Collins, he looked as if he may go all the way and the ball passed through six players before Darren Lewis, at pace, finished the move and scored under the posts, converting his try and ending the half 29-3. A really great Sports Club try.

The second half started with Matthew Donnelly again dominating the lineout and he took the Neath ball on their 10 yard line, made hard yards and skipper Thomas was in support, he went to ground and Callicot again gave quick ball to the blind side, Spears ran well was helped by Josh Collins who sets up a ruck then Callicot sniped at the line just short he was stopped but Ryan Wallis was there and dived over for a well taken try. Lewis added the points.

The next try followed quickly as now the Sports are rampant and opening the ball at will. Callicot widened the attack to Spears he did really well and may have finished it himself but Josh Collins was in support to score half way out. With Darren Lewis now substituted the kicker was Jack Lesser who made the kick look easy as the Sports extended their lead to 43-3.

With most of the subs now on the field the forwards had fresh legs to punish the visitors even more with Josh Thomas linking well with Vernon Dladla for the prop to score under the posts, Lesser made the score 50-3. The final try was not long in coming and only fitting that it came from Matthew Donnelly who supported the center of the field well just opened up his long legs and ran in with ease to score under the posts, Lesser ended the game ay 57-3 and a good performance from the Sports against a side that showed great resolve and determination to the last whistle and should be commended on it.

The Sports have no game next week and host a Sponsors Day at the Brewery Field where a Curry will be served to the Sponsors and Committee at the half time of the Wales Georgia game. All Sponsors welcome please let Murph know if you are coming.
