Greenstars 7 Sports 29

This was the first game for the newly promoted Sports Club in this league and the first ten minutes of the game was dominated by Aberavon who had the initial possession and kept it, thus demanding a robust defensive stance from the Sports. This they did very well with the threequarters needing to tackle themselves to a standstill.

When the Sports did get possession from accurate line ball from Ryan Wallis to Josh Thomas, the distribution was very quick, and fly half Jayce Evans neatly gave a long miss pass to Lee Roderick which he made a half break from and slipped it to Chris Walker who looked as if he would get to the line, he was well covered however, Roderick was still alongside him to take a pass, but was also usshered into touch but the dynamic openside Chris Davies was in great support on the inside to score the best try of the match and take the Sports to a 0-5 lead as Scott Caldicott’s conversion missed out.

As the Sports were slightly starved of possession they were more than eager to open the ball from wherever and when Ken Morris fielded a ball deep in the Sports half, he chose to run it and made the half break to be supported by number 8, Andy Gill who ran well before feeding skipper Lloyd Wilson, he was stopped and the quick ball from Darren Lewis found Jayce Evans, he made a half break and ran a cute angle, next to him was Lee Roderick who scored near the posts. Josh Davies added the points and the Sports started to look comfortable at 0-12.
When the Sports kicked deep to the Aberavon 22, the chase by Lloyd Wilson was fast and the tackle good making the Aberavon player hold the ball on the ground and thus allowing Josh Davies to take the score to 0-15 at the break.

The Sports continue defending well and being solid in the tight scrums with the front row combination of Harris, Wallis and Thomas well out-performing the Aberavon front five. In the lineouts Josh Thomas had a great day, not only securing the Sports ball but very ably stealing the Aberavon ball on occasions.

The half back pairing of the Sports worked well and when Jayce Evans received another good pass from Darren Lewis, his miss pass to Josh Thomas gave the fullback lots of room to attack, the Aberavon defence just stifling him but that man Roderick again was at hand to take a short pass and score halfway out. Davies adding the points with a difficult kick. Aberavon then seemed to take the upper hand and once more the Sports were ‘under the cosh’ as wave after wave of good running by the young Aberavon threes asked many questions.

They were rewarded for the effort when Thomas Davies drove over following a five meter lineout. John Curran the big, impressive fly half added the points taking the score to 7-22 with 15 minutes left. Aberavon continued to press as the Spots received a yellow card ,
but the home side were unable to take advantage of this. When back to 15 players the Sports missed a few opportunities to get the all-important 4th try. Finally it did come, something of a rather orthodox move which bought enough space for Chris Walker on the left wing to round the defence and score under the posts. Davies took the final score to 7-29.

It was a well contested game and the score slightly flattered the Sports as the young Aberavon side never relented in their running attitude. The also were rather lucky that the Sports kicking out of hand was poor and seemed to be directed ay the Aberavon’s best players and not the open field.

Man of the match was share by Sports prop James Harris and second row Josh Thomas. Next week the Spors host Pontycymmer at the Bandstand field. KO 2.30pm as usual.
