BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER TENS 6 WHITLAND 0

BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER TENS 5 BRYNCETHIN 1

BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER TENS 8 LLANTWIT MAJOR 0

Bridgend Sports Under Tens were grateful for an invitation from Llantwit Major to appear in their end of season rugby festival on Sunday. Four teams including the Sports took part; Bryncethin, Llantwit and Whitland. With some spring sun shine appearing to provide near perfect conditions for running rugby, all teams entered into the spirit of the day.

The first game between Llantwit Major and Bryncethin was certainly spirited as both sides moved the ball and competed hard for a 3 – 3 draw.

Bridgend Sports took the field next against Whitland, “The Borderers.” The Sports won the toss to start. An early attack with Joel Rogers, Callum Lewis  and Cian John all involved, was brought to halt as the ball went forward. From the scrum Whitland tried to break out of defence but were pinned down and conceded possession. The Sports attacked as Matthew Gates emerged with the ball and drove forward for the ball to be worked to Callum Lewis who weaved his way through the Whitland defence to claim the first try for the Sports to take the lead.

From the restart Harri Williams put the Sports into an immediate 2 – 0 lead as he flew up to intercept a pass and race in to score.  It was clear the pace of the Sports attack was going to cause a few problems and as the team worked to close down any Whitland attack and steal ball, they exploited space, first Tom Coles was set off on a run deep into the Whitland half but was denied by a last ditch tackle.  It was not too long a wait before the next score. Harri Williams put in one of his chop tackles and from the ruck Cian John spotted the smallest of gaps down the blind side, exploited it with a run full of guile and pace to score. Joel Rogers scored the fourth and final try of the half as he gathered ball and used his pace to race in to score.

In the second half, Whitland battled for everything but could not find a way to the Sports line. The Sports broke out of defence with runs from Cadan Hayes and Morgan Edwards. They did not look back from this and tries followed with Harri Williams and Callum Lewis touching down.

Llantwit Major played out a thriller with Whitland in the next game, as the hosts just edged a win by six tries to five.

The local derby was next as Bryncethin faced Bridgend Sports. Bryncethin won the toss, early attacks by both sides broke down as passes were spilled.  Bryncethin looked to attack with possession secured from a scrum but they did not allow for the pace of Callum Lewis who raced up to intercept a pass and run in for the Sports to take an early lead.  Joel Rogers made it 2 – 0 as he was put into space from runs made by Mason Balmer and Dewi Worrall.  Dewi Worrall was rewarded for his good all round contribution towards the end of the half as a Bryncethin kick was charged down by Harri Williams. Dewi Worrall pounced on the loose ball to claim the try for the Blue and Whites to lead 3 -0.   Then came the try of the day. It was scored by Cian John early in the second half. Playing uphill, the Sports started with a switch of play that set Dewi Worrall on a run , he passed to Joel Rogers ,he linked with Cian John who made a break before he passed to Callum Lewis. He produced a deft pass to switch  play with Harri Williams . He in turn passed to Cadan Hayes who moved it back to Callum Lewis who made another perfectly timed pass for Cian John to score in the corner. Byncethin fought back to level the second half score, before former Bryncethin player Harri Williams scored the final try for the Sports to run out winners by five tries to one.

In the final game of the morning, Llantwit Major played Bridgend Sports. By this stage of the day, the Sports were playing with confidence in attack and defence. Llantwit Major tried to break down the Sports defence but could not find a way through and when the Sports secured the ball, they attacked with pace and skill to work players into space. They scored five tries in the first half with tries form Dewi Worrall Joel Rogers , two for Cian John and a final one for Cadan Hayes which was his first for the club. This try was greeted with a loud cheer from the Sports players’ parents. In the second half Tom Chick ,Callum Lewis scored before Dewi Worrall ran in the final try of the day for Bridgend Sports to return undefeated with an 8 – 0 win.
