Bridgend Sports 71 Bryncethin 5

Bryncethin struggled to field a full specialist front row so this match was played with uncontested scrums from the outset. For the first time for a while the dry conditions were ideal for the Sports style of open running rugby and the home side looked stronger from the start as center Josh Davies opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a try in the corner which he converted.

With center Ken Morris controlling and feeding his threequater partners with great skill the Sports put the pressure on the visitors. Dan James ran well for the Sports and scrum half Scott Caldicott was supplying swift ball with metronomical precision. When the ball was widened and full back Callum Griffiths popped into the line at pace there was no stopping him as he darted over for the second try that Josh Davies again converted from the touchline. Tony Millington scored the Sports next try showing his mobility at hooker before Callum Griffiths scored two more tries to complete his hatrick before the half ended at 31-0.

A variety of players were having good games for the Sports as they stretched Bryncethin time and time again. Comparative newcomers to the side callum Griffiths, Alan Gant and Jordan Semple all looked very confident with ball in hand and in defence.

As the second half kicked off, clean ball from Scott Caldicott at scrum half allowed fly half Marc Davies to show his class when he chipped a long diagonal ball to right wing Dan James who ran outside the defence to round them and score under the post. Josh Davies adding the extra points. Bryncethin fought back and were rewarded with a try by their player-coach David Thomas following a quickly taken short penalty and a good driving ruck. But by now, with the score at 38-5, the game was lost and the Sports still had lots of running left in them as the mid-field general, Ken Morris got in on the try scoring himself as he provided another easy conversion for Josh Davies when he side-stepped through the defence and although tackled his second movement was legal for the try.

The versatile Darren Lewis, normally scrum half, but doing well on the wing today made the most of a good break by Marc Davies that was taken on by Gary Punter, looked as if he may score himself but Lewis was well in support taking the score to 50-5, Josh Davies added two more. Next when Dan James picked up a loose ball he was supported by Marc Davies and the ever present Ken Morris who linked with Josh Davies who in turn fed Callum Griffiths who may have got his fourth try but he unselfishly passed inside to Scott Caldicott to score wide out for an unconverted try.

The two final tries of the game came from both props. The first from Alan Gant who was in great support as the whole threequarter line handled the ball and it was Gant who was there at the end of the movement to round the defence and score under the posts. The final try comes from an attempted quick drop out by Bryncethin that was blocked but Gary Punter and he charged to the line and was stopped short but live-wire prop Greg Thomas was there to drive over taking the final score to 71-5, when Josh Davies converted both these last two tries, taking his points for the game to 21 for the second successive game.

So many players had good performances in this very open game. Ken Morris was man of the match as he steered the backline to 8 tries and interestingly, the remaining 3 tries were scored by the front row. Mention must be made of Callum Griffiths who looked comfortable at full back and in scoring three tries claimed the first hatrick of the season. The next Sports game is away to Baglan on the 4th March.
