Glyncorrwg 12 Bridgend Sports 41

Considering the weather preceeding this game, the pitch at Glyncorrwg was in remarkable condition. Again both sides were suffering from this ‘stop-start’ season that has fallen foul of the weather and interrupted now by International Fixtures.

For the Sports it was interesting to see a few changes in the backs namely Callum Griffiths starting for the first time at full back after some impressive appearances for the Second Team, this meant that regular full back Josh Davies moved to the centre. From the outset the Sports backs were slicker in their passing and created many scoring opportunities. Josh Davies opened the scoring with a penalty from 45 yards, then fly half Mark Davies and center Ken Morris combined to put wing, Lee Roderick away to score near the corner, a good conversion by Josh Davies took the score to 10-0. Josh Davies then scored an individual try when he gathered the ball inside his own half and seemed to run right through the Glyncorrwg side to score an unconverted try wide out 15-0.

When Glyncorrwg got within 15 metres of the Sports line their driving and recycling was quite outstanding and they managed to create a neat try when winger Josh Thomas was in good support of the driving forwards. The conversion by centre Alun Newell  shortened the Sports lead to 15-7. The first half finished when good movement of the ball went along the back line from the Sports scrum half Scott Callicott and fly half Mark Davies allowed Josh Davies to score his second try which he also converted and the half ended 22-7.

The second half proved to be very similar to the first, after good running by the Sports backs and forwards which created room for ‘Rookie’ full back Callum Griffiths to score his debut, and  bonus try quite wide out. The difficult conversion failed  but the game by this time was just about won at 27-7.

But Glyncorrwg were not to be denied and once again a classic try was created by the strong forwards drive and it was only fitting that their outstanding full back Ben Evans was at hand to score wide out but the conversion failed taking the score to 27-12.
Although it seemed the glamour and try scoring was coming from the deft handling of the Sports threes, their forwards played much more than ‘just their part’ as well, with good solid set pieces, many turnover balls and strong driving rucks and mauls.

There was a welcomed return for Sports second row Josh Thomas in the starting lineup but it was his second row partner Rhys Obbard  who took the man-of -the -match award.
It was all Sports in the last quarter and tries by substitute Matthew Donnelly and fly half Mark Davies sealed an impressive away win 41-12 when Josh Davies converted both their tries, taking his personal tally to 21 points. The hard work of the front row once more gave the Sports the platform they needed, and they took several scrums against the head.

This was a good all round performance from the Sports who rest once more next week before they entertain Bryncethin on the 18th February at the Bandstand field. KO 2.30.
