Sports 41 Tonmawr 12

The Sports started this game with great pace and slick, quick inter-passing along the theers line and were awarded a penalty on the Tonmawr 22 which scrum half Scott Callicott took quickly and linked with center Josh Davies who retuned a scoring pass to the quick thinking scrum half who crossed the Tonmawr line in the corner. Davies’s failed convertion hitting the post. It was Callicott who was quickly in the action again a few moments later as he made a good half break before finding Matthew Donnelly at his shoulder. The second row then ran twenty metres before unselfishly passing to Chris Walker for the wing to score half way out. The kick failed but the Sports had a 10 point lead.

Walker then had a good run from deep in the Sports half down the left wing, the ball was recycled through the centers and then the forwards linked through Gary Punter, Gareth Bartlett and finally in the hands of flanker Lewis Obart who scored in the right hand corner. With just 15 minutes played the Sports were leading 15-0. The next plays came from good Tonmawr close support in the forwards and their number 8, Westley Brown made good yards before linking with the wing Calum Howell who scored an unconverted try in the corner. From deep in the Sports half following a clearance from Tonmawr, full back Callum Griffiths linked well with wing Chris Walker who made 25 yards before some good interchange passing from the whole of the Sports back row but they were stopped yards from the line for a 5 meter scrum.

The Sports attacked the Tonmawr threes with a good dummy run from fly half Mark Davies as fullback Griffiths puts some pace into the line and ran well and looked as if he should score himself but gave a neat pass to Lee Roderick to score the bonus point try in the corner. At 20 -5 the Sports looked to be running away with the game but Tonmawr’s resolve was good and number 8, Westley Brown did well to break the Sports defence and score a good try that fly half Mike Arnold converted taking the score to 20 -12 and Tonmawr were back in the game.

As the end of the half came the Sports again had neat passing along the line and good yards made by Callicott before support inter-passing betweek both wings, Chris Walker and Lee Roderick ended with Roderick getting his second try and the half ended 27 - 12 when Josh Davies got his first conversion.

When Tonmawr try to take a quick drop out, hooker Tony Millington charged it down, re-gathered the ball and linked with Josh Davies before he sliped the ball to Punter to score a try that Davies easily converted. The seventh and final try came when from a penalty, Mark Davies kicked for the corner and in a classic training ground move and a short ball to the front of the line, it is Gary Punter who looped to the front scoring a try in the tram lines . A difficult kick was converted by Davies ending the game 41-12.

The Sports secured promotion last week with the win at Banwen and now have their sights on overhauling the league leaders Porthcawl who have finished their league games and the Sports need to get just 4 points from their remaining games to win the league.

Next week the Sports are away at Crynant before finishing their season at Baglan on the 29th.
