Ten Tries for The Under Tens

BRIDGEND SPORTS UNDER TENS 10 BRYNCETHIN UNDER TENS 0

There was an air of determination about Bridgend Sports under tens this week as the Blue and Whites  took to the field for the against the Red and Whites of Bryncethin. Bryncethin started and  soon ran into a wall of defenders as the Sports kept their shape in defence and pushed the away team back deep into their own territory.

The pressure soon secured possession for the Sports with both Harri Williams and Callum Lewis leading in the tackle area.  The possession was then exploited and used to good effect. Firstly,  Dylan Morgan made a very welcome return to the fold for the home team, he spotted  a gap down the blind side made the run and when tackled just short of the line used his strength to drive over for the score. Bryncethin almost hit back immediately with a good touch line run but they were forced into touch deep into their opponents half.

From the restart Sports Dewi Worrall made excellent ground before he off loaded to Joel Rogers who sprinted up field before passing on to supporting player Callum Lewis who made no mistake to run in the second try.  Bryncethin tried hard to hit back quickly but spilled a crucial pass. From the scrum Joel Rogers smartly switched play and raced through the defence to take the home team into a 3 – 0 lead.   Bridgend sports then introduced a few team changes, as part of their policy to ensure all squad players get game time to develop.  The players blended into the game perfectly, this enabled the Sports to keep up the pressure on the Red and Whites.  The team got the reward when Tom Chick received the ball and spotted a gap in the cover out wide to race to the line for the home team’s fourth try. A four nil half time lead could have been more if the ball had been off loaded to supporting players. A few words of encouragement from the coach at half time registered with the young players who soon put matters right at the start of the second half.

Starting with possession, the half time words and the ground work at training soon became evident as the Sports attacked from the off. Players ran straight and started to put players into space with the pass.  The ball was moved wide then switched inside, Dewi Worrall , Harri Williams and Callum Lewis combined for the latter player to score his second try of the game.

Bryncethin mounted an attack next, they made good ground to take play up into the Sports half where another Sports player making a welcome return Ben King brought the attack to a halt with a cover tackle. Caden Hayes then snapped up the loose ball to use his pace to take play deep into the Bryncethin half, unfortunately the attack petered out but it was not long before the Sports mounted a further attack, Ben King charged up field off loaded to Dewi Worrall, who linked with Callum Lewis, he then popped up the ball for supporting player Harri Williams to score the second of the half.  Dylan Morgan scored the third try of the half before Bryncethin fought back to stem the tide for a short while before the Blue and Whites attacked gain, Matthew Gates did great work to take play up into the Bryncethin 22 metre area, he was tackled before placing the ball perfectly for Callum Lewis to maintain the attack upto the line for the ever present Harri Williams to receive a pass to score.

Bridgend Sports attacked again as they robbed Bryncethin of the ball from the restart, the ball was worked to Callum Lewis he, pinned his ears back to fly down the touch line but was held up just short. Play was switched inside and Ieuan Pilliner used his strength to drive over the line to score.

The final score of the game was a fitting reward for a determined team effort epitomised by the efforts of Hari Williams and Callum Lewis. It was Callum Lewis who claimed the final try and his hat trick for the Sports to run out ten – nil victors. Bryncethin never gave up. They fought hard but could not match a Bridgend Sports team that are beginning to build some urgency and momentum into their game.
