Under Tens Build Momentum

Pencoed Under Tens 1    Bridgend Sports Under Ten 7

Bridgend Sports were fortunate to have an away game at Pencoed this week as the availability of a 3G pitch enabled the game to go ahead. Pencoed are a club who for many years have led the way for clubs in the development of mini and junior rugby. The club has seen a number of their players go on to gain full Wales and British Lions honours.

Bridgend Sports started the game and were quickly into the action. They soon settled into their stride moving the ball along the line to put players in space. Pencoed first up tackling initially caused the Sports to go to ground but excellent technique at the ruck by Ieuan Pilliner ensured the ball was recycled and Callum Lewis was given room to use his speed to beat a number of defenders to run in the first score from the half way line.

From the restart Pencoed tried to enter into the spirit of playing attractive rugby but this was met by a solid wall of defenders in Blue and White. The pressure told and possession was quickly lost to their opponents, the Sports mounted several attacks through Tom Chick and Mason Balmer but it was left to Cian John who, with his pace, was causing havoc in the home side defence. He was half checked by a tackle ten metres from the line but he spun out of it, to claim the try.

Pencoed mounted an attack from the next restart, initially they made good ground before Callum Lewis for the Sports spotted an opportunity for an intercept pass; he made no mistake and sprinted in from the half way line.  A few minutes later, Pencoed looked to have broken the Sports defensive line with a smart break but a stumble denied them the breakthrough which would have led to a try towards the end of the half. They continued to pressure but were unable to escape the solid tackling from Bridgend Sports players with Dewi Worrall, Harri Williams, Joel Rogers, Ieuan Pilliner and Iestyn John prominent.

The Sports rounded off the half when Callum Lewis claimed a hat trick, Dewi Worrall gathered the ball in open play and drove forward, Joel Rogers supported and passed on to Iestyn John who changed the angle of attack. He linked with Harri Williams who made ground before Callum Lewis took an inside pass to score, for the away team to lead 0-4.

Pencoed fought back early in the second half by scoring the first try. They tried extremely hard to close the 1 – 4 gap but could not find a way through an organised Sports side. Their early second half lead was soon cancelled out as Mackenzie Dent received the ball fifteen metres out, following good work from Mason Balmer, Dewi Worrall and Harri Williams which released him into a gap. Mackenzie Dent charged forward and used his strength to force his way over in the corner.

The game entered a hectic period with both sides making errors. Pencoed pressured, forcing the Sports to concede a number of penalties before the Sports broke out of defence with an excellent run from Cadan Hayes who took play deep into the Pencoed half.  This enabled Bridgend Sports to gather their composure and put together some positive flowing rugby which saw them run in a further two tries, one from Cian John and a fourth from Callum Lewis at the end of the game to make the final score Pencoed 1 Bridgend Sports 7.
