Under Tens Dominate at Windswept Porthcawl

Porthcawl under Tens 0  Bridgend Sports under Tens 5

Bridgend Sports under Tens proved too strong for the Seaweeds of Porthcawl this week. The game was switched from the South Road ground to Rest Bay. The sides may have escaped a soft muddy pitch but they had to contend with a strong easterly wind that blew across the pitch. The conditions called for good ball retention and safe hands from the teams.

Bridgend Sports met the challenge well but soon fell on the wrong side of some highly technical decisions which initially stifled play but good discipline saw the Sports respond with competent tackles and good rucking to retrieve possession then mount  attacks as they moved the ball skilfully, at every opportunity. They  scored two tries in the first half , the first following a scrum just outside the Porthcawl twenty two, Callum Lewis and Harri Williams worked a neat switch , which saw play taken up  to the Porthcawl line. Harri Williams popped up in support at the breakdown to power his way over for the try.

Whenever they had the all the Sports tried to play some flowing rugby as they moved the ball at every opportunity. Callum Lewis scored the second try of the half as the Sports mounted an attack through Cian John before he passed the ball onto Mason Balmer who made ground before being tackled. From the ruck, Callum Lewis spotted a gap down the blind side six meters out to score.

From the start of the second half, Cian John weaved his way through several defenders again, before being penalised for a hand off.  Porthcawl restarted but their attack was soon brought to a halt by a tackle from Sports debutant Tyler Morgan which enabled Cadan Hayes to find space. He raced down the touch line only to be stopped just short of the line, by the Porthcawl cover.

Porthcawl tried to break out of defence but were met by a solid wall of defenders which forced an error enabling the Sports to counter with an attack that saw Mackenzie Dent break through and secure the first of three second half tries.   Iestyn John scored the fourth try for Bridgend Sports after a delightful pass from Callum Lewis that deceived his opponents, Iestyn John then gathered the ball, he jinked to create a gap and score the try.

Cian John scored the final try of the game last week and repeated the trick again this week when he sprinted in for a score to conclude a solid all round squad performance where all squad players took the field.  It is a key objective of the Bridgend Sports coaching team to allow all players playing time to help facilitate their development.

The Sports had scored five unanswered tries in the testing conditions. Next week they  face a testing trip away to Pencoed.
