Banwen 10 Bridgend Sports 33

The Sports travelled to Banwen looking for important points that would help keep them in the hunt as the league winners. However, Banwen took the lead early in the first half when they created an overlap wide out on the right wing to score in the corner which was well converted  to take them to an early 7-0 lead. Most of the half was played between the 22 metre lines with both defences holing well as the weather closed in and made fluent movement difficult and the half ended with the home side hanging on to their 7-0 lead.

The second half started and the Sports now were playing with both the wind and slope and it was just minutes before they scored their first try. From a driving maul deep in the Banwen 22, which was pulled down by the home side over the try line, the Sports were awarded a penalty   try which was easily converted by Darren Lewis. The second try came minutes later from right wing, Jamie Williamson who cut inside from wide out to score under the posts for another easy conversion for Lewis. And just like London buses having seen no scoring for the first half, three came at once in the second when skipper Lloyd Wilson after a forward drive, took control and drove over for a fine forward try. With Lewis on form with the kicking the Sports led 7-21 with barely 10 minutes of the half gone. Banwen then exerted some strong pressure on the Sports who ‘took their foot off the gas’ rather and gave away a penalty allowing Banwen to keep closer in touch at 10-21.

This was short lived as skipper Wilson stirred the side up and their play in the loose was rewarded when second row Matthew Donnelly picked a loose ball and sprinter a full 50  meters to score wide out for an unconverted try and the Sports extended their lead to 10-26. The Sports were using the elements well and were unlucky not to score more although the home side defence was strong.

Then in the final minutes of the game Dan James at fly half, broke the Banwen line to score near the posts and this was converted by Darren Lewis taking the final score to 10-33 with a second half performance that the Sports had been promising to produce for the last few weeks but had been hampered by heavy conditions. Next week sees a lay off in the fixture calender because of the start of the 6 nations.

Next home game is an away fixture to Birchgrove on 20th February.
