Sports 64 Banwen 6

The rain cleared just in time to get this eagerly awaited contest started at the Bandstand, with both teams looking to reinvigorate their start to the league campaign. It was the Sports who instantly started on the front foot. No 8 Gareth Bailey taking good ball up – before the ball was spread wide, where eventually wing Ryan Russell fed to centre Dan James to score in the corner in the first five minutes of the match. Jamie Pensom just missed conversion from the far touchline. It wasn’t until 30 minutes into the match where the stout Banwen defence was broken next. Russell took a high up and under, cut through the defence with pace and found his fellow wing Jack Evans in support. This time Pensom converted a great kick from out wide to make it 12-0. From the restart, the Sports were immediately penalised for an offside infringement and Banwen centre Ieuan Eltham slotted a neat penalty to cut the deficit. Outside half Pensom was then forced off the field with a hamstring injury which meant Jayce Evans went 10 and replacement Darren Lewis slotted in at scrum half. Just before half ende, Sports were presented with a penalty chance, choose to go for the lineout. Ad after some great passing in midfield, wing Ryan Russell again scythed through the defence to score under the posts. Darren Lewis converted with ease. Eltham then kicked his second penalty with the last action of half to make the scores 19-6 at the interval. The 2nd half started much the same as the first, with Sports looking to attack at every opportunity. A Jayce Evans burst saw the ball get distributed out to Dan James, who took his second try of the game. Conversion was narrowly missed. Then, a similar burst from midfield, this time from evergreen flanker Gary Punter, who found returning hooker Ryan Wallis in support to score under the posts. Again, Lewis converting with no problem. The Sports were then reduced to 14 men as Man of the Match Russell was yellow carded for not releasing at the ruck area. This didn’t deter the Sports from continuing to attack though and a fumble in the Sports half saw Jayce Evans pick up the loose ball and run half pitch to score a fine try, which Lewis duly converted. With the game continuing to open up and the visitors tiring, winger Jamie Williams ran practically length of field, before kicking ahead – with the Banwen defence in disarray they conceded the penalty. A quick tap penalty saw the ball eventually find its way to Jayce Evans to score for him to register his second of the afternoon. Wing Williams was then rewarded for his tireless efforts throughout the game with a fine individual try of his own. From that restart, he then hacked the ball ahead, it bounced up and teammate Russell volleyed the ball on further, picked up the kind bounce and scored a great try to take the score to 57-6. The final play of the match saw replacement Darren Lewis score an easy try under the posts which he himself then converted to make the final score 64-6. An emphatic victory for the Sports which will give the much needed confidence going into the next few weeks, as they look to start climbing the league table.
