Under Elevens Back to Strength

It has been a tough few weeks for the Bridgend Sports Under Elevens, as a combination of poor weather conditions, illness and injuries conspired to frustrate progress with rugby on the field.

With an improvement in the weather and an ambition from the young players to play, Sunday saw a welcome return to the field for the Sports as they faced Llantwit Major.  Both clubs also took part in the WRU “Supporting Sunday”. An initiative designed to promote a positive environment for players, coaches and parents. There was an abundance of good will with words of encouragement and positive behaviours on display all morning.

Both sides responded, as they tried to run and move the ball at every opportunity to the appreciation of the large groups of parents and supporters in attendance.  The Sports won the toss and kicked off. They started the stronger of the two sides, they secured possession at the set piece and open phases of play and on the odd occasion in the first half, when they conceded possession to the Llantwit Tigers, every player took responsibility and tackled the Llantwit attackers to quickly regain possession.

The Sports soon dominated play and they scored six first half tries. Cian John controlled matters well from outside half, running to create space and then linking with forwards and backs to vary play well. Forwards Mackenzie Dent and Megan Lewis scored with the latter scoring a hat trick mid-way through the half with Cian John and speedster Tom Chick scoring for the backs. Tyler Burton almost added the seventh but was hauled down inches short of the line. The Sports frequently sort to move the ball wide and when play broke down the forwards sustained attacks with strong driving runs with Chloe Gant always in the thick of things. Top tacklers in the first half for the Sports were Bailey Llewellyn Hopkins, Callum Lewis, Ieuan Piliner, Tyron Davies and Will Ellis.

In the second half, Llantwit Major showed great conviction and put the Sports under early pressure as they began to get a little more control behind. Unfortunately for them, they surrendered control when an alert Cian John intercepted a pass to race in from the half way line to secure the opening score. Good work from the kick off, once again retrieved possession for the Sports to set Mason Balmer away on a charge and Jodie Keane on a run down the wing, but a now more competitive Llantwit side stole the ruck ball.

The rain made an appearance to stifle the more ambitious play. inevitably, the ball was soon spilled and from an attacking scrum, Sports Callum Lewis switched play first feigning to go to the open side but he then running to the blind, he left the defence flat footed to score the second try.  Harri Edmunds secured the third try of the half when he was put in space on the opposite wing, he raced away from the half way line to score.  Llantwit Major attacked from the next kick off and looked to have found space down the opposite wing with only Sports player Iestyn John to beat. Iestyn John is a player with the heart of a lion and he put in a try saving tackle to prevent a certain score.

The final score of the game came when Sports outside half Cian John made a nice outside break before he linked with supporting player Dylan Morgan who had all the work to do to sustain the attack, he saw the opportunity for the line and he raced away on an arching run to score out wide to round off an excellent morning for the Sports.
